It seems like no one appreciates how quickly China is overcoming the U.S. as the world's dominant power. We are all obsessed with parochial irrelevant shit while they execute a plan to completely overtake us. Their political structure enables them to make massive investments in the most important new tech (AI, quantum electronics, genetic engineering) and they are completely fucking over all of our top industries. They will also absolutely engage in genetic engineering to enhance their population in the near future while we are held back by outdated ethics and our dysfunctional system. God damn the future is depressing on every level. At least we will have cool VR and drugs to escape reality.

Brother I don't disagree with ur criticism of our status but I'm not sure you understand that China probably has more language/ethnicity "diversity" than we do. Difference being that they handle their URM groups a little differently.

i can't stand nyuug's poasting, but he did make the point in one of his few lucid, non-shtick moments that one of the benefits to living in a place like S. Korea is that everyone is the same blood, so people do try to make the best decisions for their country because the citizens are family.

i believe it. multiculturalism is a corrosive ideology.

Yes, the best run countries are all relatively small countries with homogeneous high IQ populations. We are too diverse and too big to be governed effectively. At least to be governed effectively in a democratic system.

i've poasted extensively on this.

i'm still of the opinion that we have a system of government -- federalism -- that can help us succeed, but that would require reversing course and devolving a lot of power to the state and local governments. there's probably too much power and money at stake to do that, however, though i do wonder if Trump's election and talks of California seceding might help push us in that direction.

Yes, because they will destroy our industries and treat us like vassals. The government is working with their industry to build up competitors to companies like Boeing, GE, Microsoft and the thousands of relatively anonymous companies that drive our economy. What does our economy look like when everyone is buying Chinese tech and industrial products like planes and tractors? We are going to be fucking decimated.

zero from what I can tell, at least not much different from now, other than China owning a few megacorps here, and more obvious references in summer blockbuster movies designed to appeal to the "Chinese market" (ex. tacked on 15 minute scene in Macau casino in movie otherwise full of american actors, more asian supporting characters, etc)

Anyway, don't the Chinese hate and mock western shitlibs? At least they have that going for them.

Ljl at using nominal figures and its associated accounting wizardry

PPP GDP of China is already signifcantly higher than the USA. China produces 23 trillion dollars vs America's 19 trillion. And that gap is widening.

The US (and western aligned) nations derive much of it's currency strength by being the center of the financial world. When the day comes when the US cannot longer secure its interest - or the financial system is undermined when hackers regularly sabatoge our financial systems and the world moves closer to the yuan - we are fucked. America will become much, much poorer.

they don't actually need to fight land-battles if their missile tech is sufficiently worrisome to keep american carrier battle groups at a certain distance from their shores. that's russia's strategy, in any case. basically threaten to missile-spam a carrier and its escorts so hard that the group will be assured of taking significant losses no matter the countermeasures.

they know that america is in a lot of debt and isn't that cohesive anymore and that the shock of losing a CBG would probably create a political crisis all by itself.

america has literally BEGGED for third-world status, importing mass-hordes of disparate third-worlders into itself for half-a-century and counting. and that's exactly what we're going to get. and anyone who acts surprised at this fact should be deported to a source-nation for american immigrants like somalia or honduras to get a better sense of how this happened.

even earlier, they were obsessed with the sassanids to the exclusion of all else, and were taken by surprise when the sassanid empire fell to an islamic caliphate. i remember some history book which claimed that the byzantines at the time didn't even know what "islam" WAS. it was so irrelevant to them that it wasn't even cataloged in their libraries and they didn't have translators who could interpret arabic script because it was seen as an irrelevant backwater desert tongue.

Jesus, I know this bort has always been racist, but I like to think it hasn't always been this stupid. How the hell does China threaten the U.S.? Militarily, they have one aircraft carrier. And it's a Soviet-era piece of shit that barely floats. In a direct military conflict between the two nations, China would be absolutely obliterated. At the moment China isn't even trying to develop the capability to win a war with the U.S. Instead they are focusing almost exclusively on deterring the U.S. from meddling in what China sees as their sphere of influence (much less mainland China itself). Absolute worst-case scenario is that the Chinese military may get to the point where we couldn't protect Taiwan from invasion or counter China's claims in the South China Sea. Right now, however, if the U.S. were to invade North Korea and keep going, China wouldn't be able to stop us from driving straight to downtown Beijing unless they were willing to use nukes.

And economically China poses no credible threat, either. Almost all the truly innovative technology in the world originates in the U.S. Companies like Tesla and Apple set up shop in the U.S. because of stable institutions, protection of property rights, and far and away the best university system in the world. There is a reason that thousands of Chinese students come to study in American universities every year (and the vast majority of them try to remain in the U.S. after graduation). We are literally stealing all of China's best and brightest and somehow they are going to destroy our economy? Lol!

China's economy at the moment consists almost entirely of making cheap knockoffs of American innovations. That was a viable strategy when China was a 3rd World shithole where factory workers were willing to work for poverty-level wages. Now China has a growing middle class that isn't willing to work for peanuts any more. Chinese manufacturing growth has already slowed dramatically. Manufacturers are looking for cheaper labor in other parts of Asia (or returning to the U.S.). The model of making cheap knockoffs won't work for much longer.

And then there are Chinese demographic problems. The one child policy has left China with very few young workers and a shit of olds. Pretty soon pensions are going to be bankrupting the country. Meanwhile the U.S.'s liberal immigration laws mean that we have a far younger population than any other industrialized nation. Yes, Social Security will be a problem in the U.S., but our pension problems will be minor compared to anywhere in the industrialized world (much less China).

People also don't seem to remember that when the Chinese become wealthy, they suddenly want to buy iPhone's and Xboxes and Chevrolet's and things like that. A huge Chinese middle class will be an enormous boon to American exporters. I welcome the rise of China. It's potentially one of the best growth opportunities for American companies in the next several decades.

So no, there is very little to fear from China. China will almost certainly surpass the U.S. in terms of GDP within the next decade or two. (They have already passed the U.S. in terms of GDP at PPP.) But that's a meaningless dick measuring contest. GDP per capita won't approach Western levels within our lifetime, and China is unlikely to seriously challenge the West in terms of hard or soft power within that time, either. And it will be a huge new market for Western exporters. The fact that your wife is batshit crazy is a cause for concern. China is not.

"Right now, however, if the U.S. were to invade North Korea and keep going, China wouldn't be able to stop us from driving straight to downtown Beijing"

this is the kind of illusory boomerific thinking that has fucked us over so much. multiple things would stop us:

-the expense. we're at 100% of debt/GDP. taking on more debt for a major war is only workable if we had strong national will,

-WHICH WE DON'T. the casualties from that sort of war would be substantial and would create massive domestic discord. china would engage in 4th-generation warfare within the US to amplify these problems using various tools - industrial/power sabotage, attacks by loyalists against US-based targets like officials/soldiers and their families, attacks on the financial system itself, etc.

-the combined effects of the price to wage the war and the price inflicted by the consequences of the war would create instability serious enough to potentially pull the country apart, and certainly to oust the political leadership in DC en masse if democracy is even functioning after that.

Look, to be clear, I'm not suggesting that the U.S. should invade Beijing. It would be an absolute catastrophe for all the reasons you listed. I'm just pointing out that if China somehow became an existential threat, we could. Meanwhile, China couldn't launch a successful invasion of Nicaragua, much less the U.S. Their "aircraft carrier" probably couldn't even make it across the ocean, much less support an invasion. And don't overlook the importance of allies. The only reason that the U.S. would have a prayer of invading mainland China is because we have allies in South Korea and Japan who will let us use their territory to base our troops and refuel our ships and planes and so forth. What allies does China have in the entire world? North Korea? lol! The point is that China isn't anywhere close to being able to win a war with the U.S., and probably won't be any time in our lifetimes. Worst-case scenario is that they might try to invade our Asian allies and we wouldn't have the capability to stop them. But they are probably a century away from posing a military threat to the U.S. mainland.

Historically there has always been a tendency to overstate our external threats. From the Soviet Union’s supposed military and technology supremacy and OPEC’s control of the global oil market in the 1970’s to Japanese industry in the 1980’s and outsourcing to India in the last decade – there has always been overhyped external threats. China’s one-child policy will likely create a demographic disaster, they are overly reliant on infrastructure stimulus and have exploding debt, haven’t shown a true capability to innovate and suffer from rampant corruption. China very well could be a paper tiger. We don’t know yet. But, there are very concerning differences between China and some of these past threats.

Your references to Apple and Tesla are true, but this is probably what American businessmen said about Japan until everyone started wanting Toyotas and Sony electronics. Chinese technology is improving at a rapid pace. There are also technology considerations that have no historical precedent – like genetically engineering a smarter population and developing hyper-advanced AI and autonomous systems.

“Chinese companies are now competitive with industry leaders like Samsung and Apple. The Chinese market is hyper-competitive: small innovative startups (Oppo, OnePlus, etc.) compete with medium sized entities (e.g., Xiaomi, only recently a small startup itself) and giants like Huawei and Lenovo (Motorola).”

http://infoproc.blogspot.com/2017/11/pocket-ai-from-beijing.html

“While China still lags the US badly in some areas, and its exported weapons have had reliability issues, signs abound that its military hardware is either catching up or becoming good enough to pose a real challenge in a potential conflict. A military modernization program pushed by Chinese president Xi Jinping is spurring things along.”

https://qz.com/975497/chinas-military-tech-is-becoming-less-of-a-joke-and-more-of-a-threat/

“Under an ambitious plan unveiled two years ago called Made in China 2025, Beijing has designs to dominate cutting-edge technologies like advanced microchips, artificial intelligence and electric cars, among many others, in a decade. And China is enlisting some of the world’s biggest technology players in its push.”

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/07/business/made-in-china-technology-trade.html

The fact that China is such a big market and they are being so strategic in trying to use every lever of power they can to dominate the world is a cause for concern. Maybe I am an idiot, but a lot of other people are seeing this too that are in a position to know. Our biggest advantages are our legal system/rule of law and ability to assimilate high-skilled workers. The best thing we could do as a country would be to actively recruit the smartest people in the world to live and work here and stop the third-world invasion that is currently happening. The influx of European scientists/engineers like Werner von Braun and John von Neuman in the post-war era was one of the best things to ever happen to us. We should be replicating that on a mass-scale because our native high-IQ population is barely reproducing while you have squat mayans pumping out 5 kids a piece.

“There is one challenge on the current scene that is substantially more difficult than those faced in the past, and that is China,” Lighthizer said. “The sheer scale of their coordinated effort to develop their economy, to subsidize, to create national champions, to force technology transfers, and to distort markets in China and throughout the world is a threat to the world trading system that is unprecedented.”

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-09-18/trump-s-top-trade-negotiator-calls-china-an-unprecedented-threat

"If I look out to 2025, and I look at the demographics and the economic situation, I think China probably poses the greatest threat to our nation by about 2025," he said. Dunford also told the committee that "China is focused on limiting our ability to project power and weakening our alliances in the Pacific."

http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/26/politics/dunford-us-china-greatest-threat/index.html

“The One Belt, One Road initiative appears to be a combination of geopolitical, economic, and military strategy put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping to achieve multiple Chinese aims. Xi’s speech at the Belt and Road Forum offers clear historical analogies hearken back to a time when China saw itself as the “Middle Kingdom” – literally at the center of the world.”

This should literally be shouted from the rooftops. We should be encouraging our best to have more children, we should be repelling third-world, low skill immigrants, and we should admit some number of the best and the brightest and should ensure that both they and their progeny assimilate deeply and quickly.

Yes, I really hope some version of Tom Cotton's immigration plan gets passed. Our immigration policies are totally insane and detrimental to our nation. Immigration and a foreign policy not built around spending trillions on pointless foreign wars were the only reasons I was for Trump. I just wish we had a more capable leader than him with the same message.

The problem is that the buck doesn't stop with the president on all these matters.

And when you have huge donors to both parties who want cheap labor plus gov't contracts, and when you have one party that gets votes at a ratio of 3-1 from third-world hordes, well...

The president has the ability to set the agenda. If all the president talked about was this and used every tool he had to promote an immigration bill it might work. It is totally fucking insane that the Republicans control the entire Federal government and can't get something passed that their base would be ecstatic about. If I was President I would do everything in my power to persuade or destroy any Republican that opposed my immigration bill and make clear that I wouldn't be playing ball on any other Republican priorities until my bill gets passed.

what makes you think "the best and brightest" still want to come here en masse? a lot of europeans don't even want to visit the US anymore as tourists because they are scared of getting shot. our reputation is sliding down the shitter over time. even formerly third-world backwaters like poland can retain more and more of their own top people these days at their own institutions. "america" became a big bloated unappealing entity over the past couple decades.

Have you looked at the enrollment of foreign students at U.S. universities? Even TTT state schools could fill their freshman classes several times over with nothing but Chinese applicants. As long as the U.S. remains the wealthiest country in the world with the best university system in the world, we will have no problems recruiting foreign talent.

Oh, now there's a smart idea. One of the biggest advantages that the U.S. has over China is a much younger work force, so a graying population (and associated pension costs) won't bite us in the ass nearly as much as China. So your solution is to reduce the number of younger workers in our country? Brilliant!

First, what you are proposing to do is basically already happening. Most immigration to the U.S. comes from China and India these days. And almost all of them come to study in American universities. So are are already actively recruited the best and brightest. Latin American immigration is modest these days; net migration from Mexico has actually been negative since 2008. But that's beside the point. Low-skilled Mexican workers pay into the Social Security trust fund just like Chinese scientists and engineers. If anything we should be admitting far more Latin American immigrants. We solve our demographic problems and get a bunch of cheap cooks, nannies, and fast food workers. There's really no argument against it other than racism.

(racist idiot)

The only people who lose when we allow more Hondurans to immigrate to the U.S. are low-skill workers who are competing with them for jobs. And even that is pretty limited since most Americans aren't willing to work for the low wages that Hondurans will accept. If every American family could hire a Honduran cook and nanny, that would greatly increase the earning power of white collar Americans (particularly women) who no longer have to worry about domestic responsibilities. And even low wage workers pay taxes and contribute to Social Security. Any reputable economist would say that open borders would be one of the best things we can do for economic growth.

do you know how much healthcare costs in the US per hour worked? $12. the first $12/hour in economic productivity from an american worker goes to HEALTHCARE EXPENSES. if the worker is producing less than that, then the difference is made up via public subsidy. if the worker has kids, the costs go up. etc. it is very EXPENSIVE for a modern society to import and maintain low-productivity third-world populations. this should be obvious by now. only the most diehard neoliberal shills still try to recite the talking points that you just did.

No, I am saying severely restrict low-skill immigration and try to bring in a huge number of the smartest young people in the world. I am talking about trying to attract every IIT, École Polytechnique, ETH Zurich, Cambridge, Tsinghua etc. graduate in technical/scientific fields we possibly can. Make it the most attractive place in the world for smart people to live and work.

I am open to some sort of low-skill shorter duration guest worker program based strictly on demand for the jobs you mentioned. With the caveat that they should come from a broader range of countries than those in Latin America.

This is some incredibly stupid shit right here. During the last Korean war a Chinese army in much worse shape stopped a US in much better shape than it is now. If the US tried to invade China the US would lose even without nukes entering into the equation (which, of course, they would). The US simply can't invade a 1.3 billion person country (that would inevitably be backed by Russia) without throwing in the entire military and sustaining enormous casualties and ridiculous expense, neither of which the public has any appetite for.

As I said before, yes, an invasion of mainland China would be catastrophic for the U.S. But it would be doable. And lol at the idea that the U.S. army was in much better shape in the 1950's. During the Korean War, we had to fight the Chinese and Koreans with essentially nothing other than boots on the ground. And they had a lot more boots than we did. Now the U.S. has complete dominance of the air. A few carriers would probably be enough to neutralize the entire Chinese air force. At that point all we have to do is bomb the Chinese army (and Chinese industrial sites) into oblivion until China throws in the towel. Well, they would probably go nuclear before throwing in the towel, but as long as the U.S. air force is far superior to anything else in the world, conventional war is going to go very badly for our enemies.

OP is right of course. US leadership have sold the country out for a short-lived eutopia for Boomers at the expense of massive debt and demographic collapse.

They are literally going to be engineering a smarter, healthier population while we dither.

"The Chinese word for eugenics, yousheng, is used explicitly as a positive in almost all conversations about PGD."

http://infoproc.blogspot.com/2017/08/embryo-selection-in-china-nature.html

They are really going to overtake us quickly and build the world's largest and best scientific/technological workforce and infrastructure. And whoever possesses this workforce/infrastructure will rule the world.

http://infoproc.blogspot.com/2017/06/everything-under-sun-and-chinas.html

"These guys are not very quantitative, so let me clarify a part of their discussion that was left rather ambiguous. It is true that demographic trends are working against China, which has a rapidly aging population. French and Schell talk about a 10-15 year window during which China has to grow rich before it grows old (a well-traveled meme). From the standpoint of geopolitics this is probably not the correct or relevant analysis. China's population is ~4x that of the US. If, say, demographic trends limit this to only an effective 3x or 3.5x advantage in working age individuals, China still only has to reach ~1/3 of US per capita income in order to have a larger overall economy. It seems unlikely that there is any hard cutoff preventing China from reaching, say, 1/2 the US per capita GDP in a few decades. (Obviously a lot of this growth is still "catch-up" growth.) At that point its economy would be the largest in the world by far, and its scientific-technological workforce and infrastructure would be far larger than that of any other country."

Jesus fucking christ who cares? Yes we know it's possible and probable China overtakes America as the world's most powerful country given the simple combination of a) lots of smart people b) rapidly growing economy and c) economic planning. That doesn't mean America is reduced to peanuts and we have absolutely nothing going for us. Unless your entire identity as an American is the mid-century boomer era WE'RE THE INDISPUTABLE POATUS OF THE WORLT! then we still have a big role to play as the largest country which isn't administered by leadership cults (even if they are more efficient than our own government).

This is fair. I just don't like to see the decline of the U.S. and worry about what it will look like by the time my kid is an adult.

The worst thing that ever happened to America was the fact that literally every other first world country was blown to shit in WWII. It really made our egos go stratospheric and our entire national identity morph into "USA USA #1!". Even in the interwar period (really starting in the late 1800s), when America was very likely the most powerful country, our identity was more about our internal culture and values rather than roflstomping the rest of the world.

America isn't going to suddenly turn into a banana republic. So we turn into a UK that's 7x more powerful and China is 2x more powerful than us? Your kid isn't going to be starving, he's going to be living in an advanced first world country. If you really just want to be around more white people it's not like it's very hard for an American to immigrate anyway (you just won't make as much glocapbux).

America's biggest problem isn't China, or its own economic future (in the 70s people basically thought we were going down the tubes as well), it's our own fucking ego and how corrupted our values have become. Once we saw ourselves as the masters of the planet eventually everyone became obsessed perfecting their place in the American bubblesphere, because when your identity is the center of the universe you lose any other definition of what you are.

As I said, even in the ideal scenario plays out for China, we would still be the most powerful country that isn't ran by a (certainly extremely efficient) leadership cult. I think China's rise is actually America's best hope: we're really only at our best when we're either the kooky outsiders or there is a massive threat to our ideology. Even the 90s version of America, while great to live in, still had the spirit of a morally bankrupt Glocap Uber Alles state; surface-level patriotism was high just because the GlocapBuxxx were flowing. The question is if we even care enough about what used to be our reason for being and philosophy as a country for this to take hold and make people care, or has being the World POATUS since roughly the Nixon era (when the USSR really started to decline) just made us incorrigibly lazy and self-obsessed?

I'm still dying to know how on earth you think that China plans to build the "best scientific/technological workforce and infrastructure" when their universities are a joke and all of their best and brightest come to the U.S. at the first opportunity. If you look at Chinese scientific productivity, they published more scientific journal articles than the U.S. for the first time a few years ago. That sounds troubling until you notice that Chinese universities award money/promotion/tenure based almost entirely on the number of publications rather than the quality. So Chinese researchers tend to publish low quality research in low quality journals that nobody reads. I regularly review research papers by Chinese scientists. It's almost all garbage. Most of the time it isn't even written in comprehensible English. If you look at the "best" scientific journals (Science, Nature, New England Journal, etc.), the articles are almost exclusively written by American researchers (with the occasional European). The U.S. is miles ahead of China in terms of scientific productivity, and that gap won't close for several generations at the earliest. China has been trying to convince its expat scientists to come back to China, but has had very little success despite offering enormous salaries and research funding. Apparently most Chinese scientists like free speech and due process (not to mention being able to go on youtube and Facebook). So this is just alarmism. The U.S. has a gigantic gap in terms of scientific productivity, and that's not changing any time soon.
