CR

even when I was making 200k+, we'd get a 2k a month allowance from parents to help with rent. no way we could afford it + save money otherwise

i dont get how some of my friends live here without parental support - legit living paycheck to paycheck and have tiny pink savings

$200k in MFH is more than enough if you're single and carrying less than, say, $100k debt. When I started in MFH, I made $160k salary, had $220k debt and life was fucking awful. In Jan, I'll be at ~$200k sal./~$100K debt. I live in a studio and don't own anything nice apart from a couple solid suits/work shoes. But I'm well fed, fit, getting laid regularly, and decent at my job. Things could be a lot worse.

average one bed is probably like 3400 now in MFH

food prices are outrageous too - even mcdonalds costs like twice as much here than in flyover. fewer groceries, much fewer large chains, so there's markup on all food costs compared to flyover.

even duane reade sells toiletries, shampoo, etc. at 3 times markup compared to amazon prime.

subway is expensive - 121 for monthly pass (LJL) or 2.75 for one ride. At this point, a paid off car is prob cheaper even looking at gas and insurance. I used to spend like 30-40 bucks on gas a month for a fuel efficient car.

What's crazy is that companies really don't seem to pay much more in nyc, especially companies that have multiple offices -- comp seems flat across the board.

And to top it off you have city taxes and high state taxes. ljl

CR, you take home way less and you work longer hours

it's easier to find a job in certain fields in NYC ( biglaw, and also finance).

it doesn't mean it's a good idea to move here - might as well just not work in those fields period (because you'd be working 65-70 hours a week just to make 200k). might as well take a cushy teaching job in flyover, work your way up, and end up with a higher net worth at the end of it.

Why do you guys always ignore the fact that people don't want to live in ARE and be a teacher.

And yet plenty of people choose to live in ARE and not work in law/finance...

The mentally ill striver dumbass proles can stay in MFH and work 80 hours a week for 200k. I'll enjoy my 60k a year pension and high 5 fiv/low six fig salary after 20 years of "working" as a teacher for 9 months a year in ARE. You can replace teaching with whatever non professional job you want. Lots of people work chill 9 to 5 jerbs in flyover making decent cash and have good lives and a nice, affordable house. LJL @ wagecuck poor strivers in MFH sucking boomer cock for 70 hours a week to buy some 1MM shitbox.

this is even a misnomer because a $3300 1BR in MFH is not equivalent to the $2000 1BR in atlanta, houston, miami or chicago. Those units, that have w/d, balconies, rooftops and amenities, would be more like $5500 in NY
