smart people are good at realizing things and describing them precisely. This doesn't mean they're good at addressing things, and often leads to rationalization.

It's really questionable whether this is a benefit. Not smart enough to be a legit genius, but smart enough to be aware of your various defects, and feeling like a fraud when proles think you're "omg so smart!" is probably a less comfortable mindset to just be, you know, dumb and not think about things.

The only reason the joke is funny is because of the grain of truth that it is annoying, and can be maddening, but also useful to be keenly aware of one's limitations. But in reality that deeper knowledge of one's limitations for high IQs generally comes from being put in a hive with other high achievers, so it's all ultimately just jealousy. Being a 140 IQ kid in a school full of 90 IQ kids usually results in pure meltdown craziness, because it's like being in solitary for your brain. This is the best argument against Big State U for legit 150+ IQ people, but it's an argument for Big State U for 130ish IQs.

it's not even a joke though, being aware of your own limitations is just a useful and desirable thing full stop. if this kind of stuff bothers you (in the general, not you specifically) then you need to just stop being a pussy.

smart people are always joking about how we would be happier as clueless dummies, but in reality, we would never trade places with some prole dullard - even if it did mean a guarantee of increased happiness.

seeing the world for what it is will always be a blessing, even if it's painful sometimes

I mean, is it? If I'm falling off the side of the Empire State Building but completely oblivious to my fate, then I can enjoy the ride and the wind in my hair for a few seconds. If I know I'm about to go splat, I'll be terrified and miserable. You might as well be oblivious since there's nothing you can do.

An absurd example, sure. But suppose you're a middling professional living in a declining empire and completely powerless to meaningfully interact with any of the myriad existential threats facing the civilized world and, perhaps, the species as a whole. Because that's the modal 'successful' XO poaster. Is it really better to be aware of that or would it better if it was possible to not think and just enjoy the ride?

"Is it really better to be aware of that or would it better if it was possible to not think and just enjoy the ride?"

yes, yes it is. once you grow some balls, you're able to "enjoy the ride" just as much as the clueless proles. someone who is genuinely intelligent is able to be disciplined enough to avoid being "terrified and miserable" about the world around them.

believe it or not, proles are constantly worried about shit that they don't understand. it's not easy for them, either.

Awareness of limitations is not the same thing as acceptance and calm, focused energy toward addressing one's limitations. Awareness is only desirable if you have the capacity to take the information in and make use of it in a productive way that benefits you. Realizing you suck in certain ways and having that knowledge eat at you and make you even worse is not a better outcome than just assuming you're better than you actually are. In fact, many of the most successful, highest achieving people in the world are the most convincing examples of the benefits of thinking too highly of yourself.

"Bad test taking" really is mostly flame, particularly for standardized multiple choice testing. The right answer is given to you and you either have the substantive/procedural knowledge to identify it or not. Beyond a modicum of test taking skills that can be learned in an afternoon, you're not "bad at test taking," the test just accurately determined your aptitude at whatever it was testing.

Shit, we should spread this flame to other topics. "Oh, no, I don't have HIV. The test just says I do because I'm bad at tests."

I feel that I am a "good test taker" in the sense that I can use "test taking skills" to deduce the correct answer despite the fact that I lack actual knowledge of the correct answer.

It seems to me that if I can be a good test taker, somebody else can be a bad test taker.

There is a tiny amount of this, but it only helps because you have at least some background knowledge and these "test taking skills" are simple enough that they can be learned pretty quickly. If you went into the MCATs (the medical school test which unlike the LSAT's tests substantive knowledge) blind without the substantive knowledge, your good test-taking skills wouldn't do shit. Similarly, if you went into MCAT with perfect medical knowledge and no test taking skills, you'd get a perfect score. So pretending for a moment that the MCAT is scored on the LSAT scale, test taking skills might be the difference between a 170 and a 175 but they don't explain why somebody got a 135.

I agree that "test taking skills" matter at the margins, but marginal differences between test scores are very meaningful! the difference between a 175 and a 170 on the LSAT is substantial and life-changing.

Sure, I don't think we disagree then. The thing is, "oh I'm bad at test taking" is usually used by people who got a 145 but are sure they "deserve" a 170. This was super common in my high school for people who bombed the SAT and (under the scale that was used at the time) was supposed to explain their 400 point underperformance LJL.

if that's the case, which I'm doubting from the reasoning displayed in your poast, it's because of innate intelligence not some extrinsic skill you learned completely detached from your intelligence.

your proposed bad test taker would be someone who has the knowledge to answer the question but somehow second guesses themselves or something to manage to get the answer wrong. the proposition that this is caused by some unfamiliarity with tests rather than a lack of intelligence is, in my view, specious at best

Yeah exactly. I had so much trouble trying to teach the lsat because so much of my process was intuitive and hard to explain (eg, picking answers because I see the other options are wrong vs waiting until I know why a given choice is correct).

Also it seems possible that some people are smart but have terrible poise crack under time pressure.

your first point shows that you didn't have a true mastery of the subject matter. being able to cogently explain why something is correct takes more intellectual hp than merely figuring out that one answer is better than the others.

the latter point is nonsensical: the time pressure is a primary diagnostic of the test since the ability to figure things out quickly is indicative of higher intelligence
