a full tution phd is NEVER worth paying for except maybe for econ
it would just mean that anyone who has a genuine interest in research would say "fuck it". yeah bro, just do 3 years as a 45k postdoc chasing the tenure lottery where you'll then start out at 80k (if you're lucky enough to land a tenure track job) and over several decades progress to 130k while 240k in debt
that's to say nothing of people who end up in industry after deciding they don't want to move around the next 6-7 years after a 6 year phd, and bring more knowledge/productivity to the table than your average BS. they too would just say "fuck it" because the salary difference isn't anywhere near enough to overcome 6 years of tuition

So what are they being taxed on? Sticker price of tuition is stupid. It's very often not the market price.
And is this really all that hard to circumvent? Tuitions often vary among programs. And they can vary based on residency and religious status. So why can't tuition be cheap or free for some grad programs?
