*So shitlibs

Tons of complaints that "$300k is nothing in LA!!!" or "$500,000 is lower middle class in NYC" this tax increase is unfair!!

At the same time, they love to constantly brag about the benefits and prestige of living in those cities. In fact, they consider themselves better than you because of where they live.

Seems to me that those benefits should be accounted for when judging the cost of living in relation to an income amount. Living in Birmingham, Alabama on $300,000 gets you a nice house with big yard, but UNPRESTIGIOUS culture. Living in NYC on $300,000 gets you a walk-up studio apt, but you also get the OPERA. Comes out equal.

So no, a $300k salary in NYC is not "lower middle class" when you take into account all benefits which the higher COL pays for.

Nah if you work for a living you shouldn’t have your money stolen by the government and redistributed. Huge percent of the expenditures are on stuff like military, healthcare, welfare etc. it’s basically theft.

The guy living in Birmingham could give a fuck about the weather/OPERA and is thrilled he can tailgate at an SEC game or go on a weekend trip fishing somewhere in the South.

Everyone I work with fits into the high-income bracket you are talking about in SoCal and is DYING to leave. Even those who have lived here their whole lives. But they can't yet because of family ties and other reasons. You act like it is all people moving to these high COL areas and then acting superior because they can go see Hamilton first.

Pretty much anyone making between $100-$250K in California is trying to leave.

http://www.ocregister.com/2017/04/23/leaving-california-after-slowing-the-trend-intensifies/

A dive into Internal Revenue Service data shows distinctly that, while poor people are, indeed, leaving, the largest group of outmigrants tends to be middle-aged people making between $100,000 and $200,000 annually. They may not be ideal algorithm creators for Facebook, but they do constitute the solid middle ranks critical to any healthy economy.

Guys I am talking about have deep family ties to the area, are getting child care from family members in the area, have a wife who refuses to move, have a family business that is tied geographically to the area, or some combination of the above. It is not an easy decision to just move to ARE country. They are also all in an industry where SoCal is an industry hub and it is harder to get jobs elsewhere. They aren't being "forced" to stay in SoCal, but it is not easy to leave. Do we really want to drive out the upper middle-class of places like California by raping them with taxes?

Pretty much the only UMC people moving to California now are either people from overseas or people who need to be here for career reasons.

CoreLogic’s study is just the latest in a series of reports showing California among the nation’s leaders in out-migration, trailing only New York and Illinois in net out-migration numbers.

About 266,000 more people left California than moved in from other states from 2010 to 2015, U.S. Census data show.

Orange County lost nearly 11,000 residents to other California counties or other states. Los Angeles County lost almost 270,000 but Riverside County offset that loss with a net gain of 66,000 people.

To be fair, that doesn’t include people moving to California and the region from overseas, which more than offsets the loss to other states in California and Orange County. It

"The guy living in Birmingham could give a fuck about the weather/OPERA and is thrilled he can tailgate at an SEC game or go on a weekend trip fishing somewhere in the South."

Yeah, that's my point. People have different preferences, all of which provide utility. The guy in LA couldn't care less about a weekend fishing trip or SEC football. He likes the weather and being around celebrities and telling people he's from LA.

You’re just painting a caricature now.

All I know are UMC families in LA and Bay Area and they can’t leave due to the jobs that only exist in coastal cities. Nobody is enjoying the “cultural” benefits because nobody cares.

How many of the top 10 defense contractors are located outside DC/west coast? And what happens when you don’t get that job in Indiana and Lockheed wants to hire you? You tell them “no thanks, I’m just going to continue applying to obscure companies in obscure areas where I have no ties to that city.” Yeah, that’s really how it works in the real world. Also the contractor you found has nothing to do what what my husband does. He works on satellites. So go find me a satellite company in the middle of nowhere. And I’ll just go find random hedge funds in Indiana too. you guys are so deluded on how people develop and maintain careers.

We have several people from Lockheed that come over to our company. They all worked in Boston and DC area. That's right - two expensive, high tax areas.

Just because they have SOME people in fucking Akron doesn't mean they let expensive lawyers work there.

I live in the real world, where you apply to a job that fits your expertise, not the hypothetical world where you just go apply to a location despite the fact that that location does not have your area of expertise. My husband works for a company that has offices all over. He can only do his job in the headquarters.

And it takes me 5 seconds to explain why this isn’t possible. For my husband’s particular job, he always has to work at the HQ. again, I’m in the real world, not some hypo where it’s possible to get a job in another location. My husbands been working now for 12+ years in the same specialty. You don’t just go to a random location where they don’t have that specialty. Youd never get hired anyway.

Also you’re ignoring my job. Go find me some obscure hedge fund in Akron as well. Cuz we make the decision on where to live based on where the jobs are located for both of us.

I do not care about your weird ass specialties. Your specialty, your husband's specialty, TMF's specialty, and Mandy's specialty are personal choices that were made. They are not structural problems of employment being available to professionals, defense contractors, etc. in places that are not NY LA or DC. There is no reason to base federal tax policy off of your specialties

Wtf are you talking about. I didn’t say tax policies should be based off our professions or specialities. I was responding to OP’s point that we want to live in high COL due to the “culture” which couldn’t be further from the truth.

Also specialities are often not a matter of personal choice. You certainly don’t know at 22 what you’ll be doing at 35 but before you know it, you’ve specialized and you don’t have the choice to change career course at 35 and go do something else.

Only in the sense that you're always trying to step up the ladder and the only "real" option as you saw it was to take the super high paying job instead of going sideways or even slightly down to restructure your career/skills.

I tried “stepping down” and starting over at 30 when I was unemployed and nobody wanted to hire a JD with no skills to do anything else other than law. I was applying to non legal jobs paying well under $100k. I even applied to quasi legal jobs like a legal research librarian and they thought I was “over qualified.”

If you want to work a traditional career, (i.e, not start your own business or be an entrepreneur or be in a start up environment), there are major structural barriers created by those in the position to hire because you’re not a desirable candidate past a certain age or career trajectory. I got lucky in that my current employer took a chance on me despite my not having any experience or background, but that was purely luck. It’s actually quite difficult to even change paths within the same industry.

Ugh, jfc you aspies. I already WFH most days. Getting my wife a high paying job in the middle of nowhere isn't a trivial task. The idea that it is "not hard" is retarded.

Also, jobs these days aren't permanent affairs. WFH jobs are few and far between. Selling properties, moving, etc. is also expensive. So even if I could make your idiotic plan work, it isn't clear that it would save me any money over my current path (buy cheaper houses around NYC area).

i mean she should get a job in the suburbs not the "middle of nowhere" as you call it. that way she wouldn't have to commute to nyc and you'd get to live further out and get cheaper housing, etc. even if it's a pay cut you'd be better off.

I know plenty of people who went this route and you're already half way there.

Until one of us got a job in a different location and then we would have to move at great expense. The tax situation is the same (we don't pay city tax now), and we're looking at cheaper houses, so I'm not seeing the awesome savings from your proposal.

what do i do that's not transferable? you clearly have no experience with are country. there's nothing there. no skills are transferable to are country, because nothing skilled is being done there. it's all poverty, drug addiction and decay.

Certain places like NYC have a city income tax.

Other places (like NYC suburbs) have huge property tax rates.

Obviously, the massive state tax rate in CA is going to kill you if you live there. There are also a dozen other crazy fees (owning a car is much more expensive, for example) that will get you.

YOU WANT TO LIVE SOMEWHERE "DESIRABLE" which to you means like 6 cities. You have to pay for that. Other people would rather have bigger houses with yards.

There are plenty of big cities with jobs with low taxes, but they aren't as desirable as NYC/Miami/LA etc.

At any rate, for what we do our choices are basically Silicon Valley/SF, LA, NYC, and DC (with DC being the crappiest option). We would love to move to Miami, but no jobs there. What would you have us do, exactly? Take the shitlaw equivalent of our jobs in Columbus, Ohio or Denver or whatever? Basically, we end up fucked no matter what.

In the places we live, we really are. I'm looking at getting a new house, one where we can actually raise kids in. It is only slightly smaller than the cheap house I grew up in as a kid. I'm looking at paying $550k-575k or so, not including renovation costs. One car garage, small yard, etc. Schools are incredibly mediocre in the area. It is 100% the definition of a middle-class house.

Upper class has certain expectations about lifestyle and finances that we fundamentally do not meet. And this is with two working people, both in a high paying field.

if you do something so specific that you can't get a job in atlanta, dallas, charlotte, whatever, chances are you're in an area niche enough you explicitly *chose* (back in the day) for the "prestige" and "[city] lifestyle" and it's coming back to bite you in the ass. I'm not really going to cry when a VC guy can't live anywhere besides SF/NYC and gets taxed for it, because the only way you end up in that industry in the first place is pure striverism. This isn't true of most professions (doctors, programmers, even most lawyers, etc etc).

And while I might be able to get a job in Atlanta, it is unlikely both my wife and I could.

If you like your job and make decent money, then stay put. For the most of us in law who hate our jobs, it only makes sense to make a change to an easier lifestyle. Most lawyers are unfortunately HUGE pussies. I have little sympathy for pussies who whine and bitch nonstop about their lives and refuse to make a change.

To be fair, it took a huge risk and change for me to get here. I had to get another grad degree after law school to make this possible.

But I object to the notion that what I did is something society wants to actively discourage via the tax code.

I'm not even talking about law, you can *still* bail from the ultra-striver track even after you've joined biglaw. Or if you were an ibanking associate out of college or whatever. You only really get locked in after a series of decisions where you repeatedly refused to re-evaluate your track/future and went down a very specific path. The fact that someone didn't consciously evaluate these decisions and just took the instinctual striver "more $$$/prestige" path of least resistance then complains about being double taxed garners absolutely zero sympathy from me.

CR I took the biglaw path straight out and am now gunning for an easier, chiller life in a cheap area. I have friends who stuck it out in a high stress, high hour job, got a huge mortgage in a big city, had babies, and are now financially stuck in a rut. They complain 24/7 about their lives and how they hate working so much (openly tell me about how they were way happier without huge financial obligations and when they were making like 40k/a year in a low-stress job before LS), but they actively chose to continue this lifestyle. LJL @ these whiny strivers.

These types of people will never change - they will hate their lives and continue to bitch nonstop until they die at their desks.

They aren't getting taxed because they are insufferable strivers. They are getting taxed equally because they vote for shitlib state and local governments. Ending the SALT deduction is just about not subsidizing shitlib local and state governments. It isn't about anything else hehe.

There are tons of desirable places to live outside of 6 cities. My wife wants to move to Richmond, which I would be in favor of if I could get a job there. But I can't.

Weren't you in a city like Richmond, with good jobs, before moving to LA? Dude you really have no place in this thread. Like I said, you are Exhibit A.

At least 50% of the city can’t/wont speak English. Treat you like shit if you don’t speak Spanish. People are legitimately racist and cliquish, will be very hard to break through if you aren’t rich or Latino.

Insane immigrants driving like psychopaths on the roads. Seriously, a Haitian friend of mine says it reminds him of driving in Haiti.

Serious crime problems. There are only a few habitable areas for whites and low inventory, so you’re going to need to live in a very expensive exclusive area if you don’t want your kids becoming wiggers.

There’s a general 2nd world kind of attitude there and people just operate differently than they do in other cities.

A ton of Russians live there, so not like we wouldn't have a large community there. We would send our kids to the big Russian Orthodox Church there so they would have normal friends. Yeah, I get that it is a bit like living in Latin America, but not sure that's really awful.

Shit like crime seems to be par for course for a large city. I don't think it is worse than say, NYC, LA, SF, Chicago, etc. At least whenever I'm there I don't feel any less safe.

The ocean in Miami is better and taxes are much lower. Overall, it is still cheaper too.

Again, we work in a very specific specialty. My wife has a job alert for our area in Miami. Nothing comes up. She gets daily job updates in SV/NYC with a number of new jobs every single day.

Also, just a note - if Republicans removed allowing state taxes from corporations, I'd be more ok with that. You would see businesses relocating to FL, TX, etc. Then the jobs would flow there and we would be able to follow. But so far this is just "fuck you strivers, know your place and stop trying to move up the socie-economic class ladder."
