And how have I survived so many years? It seems like I very rarely do any actual work. Every once in a while I'll do a bunch of research and write a detailed brief or memo, but usually I'm just scamming by. How do people do this?

There was a great thread a while back detailing how one poaster did virtually no work for six years then got an inhouse job. The reality is that biglaw is a scam top to bottom. There simply is not that much actual work - the whole apparatus is geared towards giving the APPEARANCE of endless useful work. Your only job is not to crack and give up the ghost.

CR. While you should *always* pad a reasonable amount -- you don't ever want to cheat yourself -- when you have those months where you just don't feel like doing any work, keep in mind that the only upper limit on padding is what causes reasonably likely consequences FOR YOU.

And the threshold is high af for most clients before they start questioning bills, and even if they did (or your billing partner did), the only likely result is that a little bit of suspicion will be cast your way. And that suspicion is largely meaningless, EVEN WHEN COMPOUNDED BY REPETITION, because no one at your firm has any incentive to stop you.
