The great irony is that the gov't is constantly pushing price transparency on corporate America, which is something I'm generally sympathetic to-- it avoids pointless nonsense if all airlines advertise their prices post-tax, every credit card calculates APR the same way, etc.
But essentially nobody knows what they pay in taxes, because the government works so hard at obscuring it (don't worry, we'll take it out of your paycheck for you so you don't even have to worry about it, HeHe). Even if you saved every receipt and added your regular taxes to your sales taxes, that would only be the beginning of the analysis. If your local business charges more because of a minimum wage ordinance, then that's an indirect tax too. I suspect my real tax rate is well above 50%, but there's really no way to be sure.
