Medicare actually has a “high earner” income tax starting at 250k mfj at 0.9%. Thanks President Obama!

The great irony is that the gov't is constantly pushing price transparency on corporate America, which is something I'm generally sympathetic to-- it avoids pointless nonsense if all airlines advertise their prices post-tax, every credit card calculates APR the same way, etc.

But essentially nobody knows what they pay in taxes, because the government works so hard at obscuring it (don't worry, we'll take it out of your paycheck for you so you don't even have to worry about it, HeHe). Even if you saved every receipt and added your regular taxes to your sales taxes, that would only be the beginning of the analysis. If your local business charges more because of a minimum wage ordinance, then that's an indirect tax too. I suspect my real tax rate is well above 50%, but there's really no way to be sure.

??? I mean the taxes are clearly stated on your w2 and recieipts (sales taxes). It’s pretty good way to calculate your tax burden. If you are against the taxes thenselves fine, but don’t argue they’re hidden somehow

That's not really true. The "employer" side of social security and medicare is a tax essentially paid by you, but the government works really hard to obscure it.

But even after you add that back in, just do retain thousands of receipts and add them up in Excel to calculate your actual tax rate.

Disagree. It takes two seconds of googling to find out this exists. And if you are self employed you pay it yourself.

Most people aren't self-employed.

And "it's a hidden tax but you can find out about it if you already know about it and google" is the opposite of transparency.
