Ritchie Valens gets mentioned too much in my opinion. I shouldn't even know who he is. He recorded a Spanish folk song and that gay "Donna" ballad. Did he even do anything else?

Joan Baez gets mentioned all the time. She is all over any 60s rock documentary that you watch. I think that a bunch of the male rock stars just wanted to fuck her, which put her in the mix more than she should have been.

CCR has just always sounded like throwaway music to me. Songs all sound the same. I could easily do without ever hearing a CCR song again. There are some really important songs in there, though, so I'm probably wrong on CCR.

Joan Baez is a folk artist though -- not classic rock. I can't recall ever hearing one of her songs on my local classic rock station growing up.

And Valens is mentioned, like Santana, because he is latino and we love diversity.

IDK, this one is 50/50.

YES.

Nah, he was decent, and I don't think he gets very much acclaim in the first place.

Not really overrated if they aren't rated much at all.

Way overrated.

I don't like them so I'm inclined to agree, but there's an argument to be made that they were incredibly creative and foundational for a lot of other bands.

HELL NO, CCR IS EXCELLENT. UNDERRATED IF ANYTHING.

Maybe. I don't think they get enough acclaim to be THAT overrated though. They heavily influenced Van Halen, they had some pretty incredible guitar work, and while I think their lyrical work was far inferior to their musical talent, I think on net they were a damn good band, if not as versatile as some of their counterparts.

Again, like AC/DC above, I think Journey and similar (e.g. REO Speedwagon, Foreigner) have their place; I think the purpose of music is to be enjoyable, and it doesn't always have to be innovative or very meaningful to fill that purpose. The issue comes when those songs comprise too high a percentage of music consumption.

I really don't think they're critically acclaimed enough to be considered overrated. Maybe they have a disproportionately high number of fans relative to their talent level, but I don't know if it's really that high.

No. The Eagles did a damn good job of bridging rock and softer pop. Plus, they're by far the most vocally talented band ever, other than MAYBE the Beach Boys

This isn't crazy. They are universally regarded as the greatest rock band ever, and nobody is really supposed to question that. I have been listening to the Beatles channel on Sirius. A lot of their material was crap. A really strong stones > beatles argument can be made.

I've always found it telling that they are more famous than any of their songs. Most casual music fans would be hard pressed to even name more than three of their songs.

Cool story boomer bootlicker now go in the street and ask around. The Beatles are a "very good" band that's considered great because they were the first to do it, not because they are the best to do it. see also, nirvana and grunge.

Also, gen x, older millennials were forced to watch tributes to this boomer cult bullshit because it was on heavy rotation on cable. Generation z, younger millennial are not forced to consume "grunge" culture for example, because they have intimate viewing options.

Eh. Depends on why you think they're overrated.

Beatles/Stones/Beach Boys did so many things FIRST, and then other people refined it. So it kinda makes sense that they lose some of their apparent luster as time goes on. For instance, without the Beatles, you don't have Pink Floyd.

I think that they're far from overrated in a critical sense, but that's partially because I think that the debate over "greatest band" is not as closed as everyone here seems to believe; people argue Stones > Beatles all the time. Plus, they made several songs that were really good across a wide range of criteria.

Hell no.

Clapton is the foundation for everyone from Hendrix to Allman Brothers. He could do power chords (e.g. most of his Cream stuff), he could do soft stuff (Let it Rain), and everything in between. Plus, he had a head for writing good music. Sunshine of Your Love is a very good example of something just sounding good because the notes are just well written.

I'm not suggesting they aren't a good band. I love them, less so now than when I was a teenager, but I don't think they deserve to be deified the way they have. I feel the same way about Led Zeppelin.

All these lists are bad. Here's a better one. These aren't all exclusively pure classic rock, but they're certainly included in a broad definition of the genre:

The Doors

David Bowie

Fleetwood Mac

Bruce Springsteen

Bob Dylan
