to break into the 170s. i had always thought people studied for 2-3 months then took the LSAT once or twice. but apparently a sizable number of people take it 3 or more time and study for 1 or 2 years or more to get into the 170s. these people are a large proportion of students at the top schools.

i took the test cold got 167 for the purpose of qualifying as a tutor. Ended up going to law school because i got in. spent law school tutoring LSAT and was getting 180's on new tests.

I consider whether actually studying would have improved my future but i ended up in biglaw and got breakfast anyway.

No - i used to get THE FEAR even worse when tutoring. I tutored for about 40 hours a week and it was always stressful trying to think about what the fuck to say for 1 hour straight per session. Now i can just chill in my office for hours a day posting and "working"

but i had always thought tutoring could be an out. I helped a lot of kids get from mediocre scores to really good scores (for them). i got one kid from 166-172 - he went to HYSCCN

My biggest achievement was one girl who went from 130 to 146 and actually got into law school to live her dream. she was rich and engaged and her fiancé wanted me dead.

why did the fiance want to kill you?

also, did you ever have students who just COULD NOT IMPROVE NO MATTER WHAT because they had already studied a lot and improved a lot before they came to you?

how the hell did you get 40 hours a week? kaplan? testmasters?

Kaplan - I was originally an SAT tutor but there was more money in LSAT so i took the test (they required >95th percentile to tutor).

A lot of my hours were tutoring, although I had the odd class here and there. I guess i didn't average 40 hours - i probably averaged 25. I would do 2 hour tutoring sessions. Classes were pretty good. 2x/week and would get "prep" time. Also had a job in the office designing portions of the LSAT program and providing "support."

Fiance wanted to kill me because i was spending too much lone time.

took it cold at 164; once did it drunk and got a 168; 179 highest PT but walked away on test day with a 174 cause retard timekeeper called LG section 5 minutes early; wasn't worth a retake because I had a lowerish GPA and knew I was out at HYS and 174 was above 75% at CCN so no point

taught it for 2 years as a 2L and 3L; always felt bad for the people who couldn't hack it; best student went from a 153 to a 171 on test day, worst student started at 157 and could never break a 168 even after 6 months

In 2010, about 36,000 applicants had LSAT scores of 160 or higher.

These days, about 14,000 applicants each year have LSAT scores of 160 or higher.

I doubt these people that grind out the LSAT prep for 2 years end up choosing not to go law school. So the enrollment of people who are actually smart in law schools these days is shockingly low.

I just kept taking old exams (didn't really "study" the test aside from working through the LGB once or twice) and my score range would gradually increase and tighten. Ended up taking like 25-30 old tests over a 12 month period. You just get a feel for the right answer the more tests you take and what used to be 50-50 guesses on the tough LR questions, you start "guessing" correct 90% of the time. Ended up taking it three times because 6 months after my first, they stopped averaging and started taking the highest score. Went up 2-3 points with each re-take.

Lol. Same here (INTP). Except I didn't study for the LSAT until the day before the test. Bought a PR book and worked through it for a few hours at the library before taking the test at USD the next morning. Got to my law center with the best of intentions, but each day was like "I'll catch up on my cases tomorrow." "It's only Thanksgiving, I can start outlining next week." Then a day or two before I'd ask my buddies for their outlines and then try to cram the entire semester into an evening at another school's law library. I'd read the outlines and then work through an entire primer in one sitting.

No. But naturals and one prep course are 95 percent or higher. The lowest LSAT score in my section was a cold 167. He was a banker/analyst who signed up for the test at 4 am when he decided he couldn’t go on in finance.

Everyone from (xo 2007) took a timed prep test cold and got 175 or higher. We also did the same on test day. I really did this and poasted in 2007. Not flame.

some people never really learned how to think strenuously under timed conditions.

taking hundreds of prep tests is more about getting their atrophied brains to function.

I'm pissed at myself for not prepping harder. I did a little bit of prep for a couple of weeks with some books.

But the one and only test I took under timed conditions was the actual IRL test.

I walked out of it feeling like I could have done better. I got a 162.

Well I really do feel that I ended up at a worse school than I could have otherwise. I probably wouldn't have ended up with HYSCCN no matter what I did, but I feel like I would have cracked the T14 with more prep.

I ended up leaving law school after 1L due to horseshit grades. Didn't fail any classes but I got like 2-3 Ds. I caught a bought of depression and stopped going to classes.

All things told, I guess I don't quite have a lot of regrets because I definitely would have hated being a lawyer and would flamed the fuck out at some point anyway. But it really is a fine line, and the whole concept that I could have gotten into a better school & finished my JD & stuck it out for a few years in biglaw is really appealing

Nothing stopping you from studying for lsat and re applying. I’m sure uva would be happy to have you and willing to overlook your disastrous semester at GW

Well with as dismal as LS apps are right now, CCN wouldn't exactly be out of the cards if I were a normal applicant with something squarely in the 170s

But I'm a nontrad with a shitty resume & I would absolutely flame out in biglaw, so there is no point to that approach.

If I were to ever be a lawyer, my only hope would be to go to a TTT on a heavy scholarship and hang my own shingle
