Being back home for Thanksgiving was great since I see my family just once a year, but god damm, the suburbs suck. You gotta drive everywhere, surrounded by fat proles, very few good restaurants, nothing to do. On Black Friday night, there was a 2 hour wait for fucking bowling. LJL.

what single men do rarely can be considered living anyway

If you prefer to live a private life in your own head, I can definitely see the appeal of a secluded house in a small rural town. Large suburbs are irredeemably terrible though, no doubt about that.

Most suburbs and small towns have shit to do in terms of restaurants or bowling or other things, but if you're into solitary things like exercising, walking in the woods, chopping wood, sitting around a fire while nursing some bourbon just breathing in the fresh air--then these places can be 180.

Enjoy your wine tasting, shitty public schools (which you fence off for muds and blacks and send your kids to lily white private schools) and intellectually stimulating conservations about why white middle america is a group of bigoted racists

I don't actually live in the MFH, so the "homeless minorities pissing, shitting, and screaming in the streets" isn't really a thing. Hispanics (and sometimes blacks) occupying the servant class is reality everywhere (yes, my maid is black, people working on my house are usually Hispanic - but when my parents hire help it is much the same in the middle of nowhere in the midwesTTT).

Public schools are a whole topic since you have both the best and the worst around major cities. Shitlibs are awful everywhere and I agree are the biggest cultural problem, but if you have half a brain you can avoid them.

suburbs are the credited place to raise kids, they are safe, yet generally close to larger cities. You have privacy, space, safety, and usually some neighbors to get along with. May not have a lot of unique dining options, but fuck it, chick fil a is better than 75% of these places anyway.

In a lot of places (most, actually), most of the super rich people live in the burbs, FYI.

cr. Also, what suburbs catering to yuppies now don't have an exposed-brick "gastropub," a "speakeasy," an Indian restaurant, a sushi restaurant, a brickoven pizza place, etc.? It's not the same as being in a city, but between them and going to the city every once in a while, bases are covered once you have kids and don't want to smell stale piss at the playground and have to suspend a peeing 3yo above a disgusting public toilet with no seat. If it's one of those Dennys-only suburbs, then it's probably not a suburb where most lawyers are living.

Other than doctors, what do you imagine these jobs are? For things like CIO or other top IT jobs, you end up with the same issue - only a few places that will pay real money for senior execs in the area and they usually aren't hiring (and if they are, they can be picky and will almost certainly know that you've been canned, along with any backstory).

This all gets even harder when you start thinking about a two income household, with both people in high earning professions.

I agree that they won't be around in 5 years, but you would be surprised at how much these guys can make, especially with a few decades of raises. That said, corporations are going to extreme measures to get rid of them. When everyone says "we're going to move to the CLOUD" - that's what it really is about. Get rid of internal IT assets, get rid of all the people that support/maintain them.

yeah, I'm talking about low six figs. Accountants have a decent lifestyle once in house though - work prob less than 40 hours a week except once a year. The job security is much, much higher than law though - it's a joke finding a job as a CPA/accountant. Practically just fall into one.

That's a very different conversation. I would be brutally depressed if I made low six figs and lived in some shit small town.

You do it because you're not weird and you don't want your kids to be weird. Suburbs are the best place to raise American kids. You know, heterosexual males that play sports and date pretty girls that wear makeup and aren't focusing on how they're going to "lean in." The reason people are fighting this ITT is because they're a bunch of weird ethnics that can't live in real America. They want ethnic striver bullshit for their children because they can't appreciate the community and simplicity of a normal job in a nice small town. Which is perfectly fine by me because the last thing I want is to deal with their asses at the local PTA meeting, whining that their kids will never get into Haaaavhad unless they add more AP classes and a varsity chess team for little Chu (goes by Charles, and is still weird).

its only boring because you are just a visitor without any strong community ties other than your immediate family. its probably not boring when you have a family to raise, work colleagues, community organizations (youth soccer league blah blah).

at the end of the day your sense of fulfillment doesn't depend on where you live. i am sure there are plenty of shutins in midtown MFH who never do anything besides work, order in food and spend time online while there are probably plenty of bros in alaska and arkansas having a 180 time and social life

grow up

major metro suburbs are pretty different than are country when it comes to "community". NOVA burbs for instance are basically an endless expanse of people who aged out of yuppiedom and don't know their neighbors but just moved there because it's what everyone else does when they shit out kids.

but they still have communities of people that usually revolves around having kids/families.

and, to be honest, those types of very affluent suburbs often still offer a lot of restaurants, shopping, activities, etc. it's not quite as much as the downtown of a major metro, but then again 40 year olds with a few kids aren't really going out 5 nights a week either.

most suburbs are horrible because they're full of the same people who were yuppies in their 20s but get old and have kids because they got bored and are just going through the routine of life. cities are horrible because of this too but you don't notice because there is fun stuff to distract you until you get old.

the best place to grow up is anywhere with character that's not a shithole, whatever it is (suburban, urban, rural). I still have an attachment to where I grew up in a way that nobody who is from Arlington TX or fucking whatever will. There are suburbs like this (mostly places that were small towns and later just became suburbs more by outgrowth of metro areas, rather than sprawl from the 60s-onward), small towns like this, and even portions of cities like this.

Lived in a suburb ~20 minutes w/ no traffic to Downtown LA.

Much better than living "in the city" ljl

You can get best of both worlds. Nice parks, small community feel (a lot of my HS teachers actually WENT to my HS and knew kids' parents n shit) while not being far from the city itself it was 180

LA is very suburban tbh.

Nah they're pretty suburban if you drive through pasadena outside of oldtown, or Burbank from Magnolia to the 5, or Glendale above the 134 they're not so urbanized and feels like a small town

a lot of "cities" in the US aren't even "urban", at least how I'd define it.

they aren't in CA. here, suburbs are typically bedroom communities with zero walkability and no downtown center, while small cities are urban communities in miniature. i haven't spent enough time on the east coast to speak to your comparison, nor would i ever want to.

I mean you can't call cities like Burbank/Glendale/Pasadena small cities though no? They all have a downtown that's walkable sure, but aint much going on there (well except Pasadena i guess) and the vast majority live in suburban houses w/ 0 walkability

i'd call all those LA suburbs. by tert/quat cities i mean those that have some measure of deurbanized geographic separation from major urban areas. SLO, SB, VTA/Oxnard, SR-Petaluma, etc.

exactly.

day to day, there's not a whole lot of difference between living in a suburban house with 0 walkability but having a denser "core" vs living in a suburban house with 0 walkability but having most of your shopping and restaurants along 1-2 major thoroughfares that cuts through a city.

something like Manhattan or Brooklyn or downtown Boston is very different.
