'activated.' In consequence, I've got low conscientiousness UNLESS I load myself up with an unrealistic amount of stress. This means I'm good in a crisis, but would tend to drive my nervous-nellie coworkers crazy if I didn't find ways to complicate my life outside of work.

I suspect many of the actions of historical figures can be fairly well-explained just with reference to the law - people seek a certain level of stress, and when they don't get it, they will (consciously or not) seek to complicate things.
