reminds me (not nearly to the extent of murder, of course) of how, inside my apartment complex, i was locked out of my apartment and i fell asleep drunk against my apartment door.

i got arrested for public intoxication as i pleaded with the officer to just let me wait for my roommate to bring the key, lost my TS/SCI, and the rest is history.

that incident ruined me. i will never forget that the shrew prosecutor refused to even talk to me, like i was some kind of heinous murderer. i was a lawyer, with a top secret clearance, protecting our country. and because an overzealous rookie cop decided to arrest me for drunkenly falling asleep inside an apartment complex, against my apartment door, while i waited for my roommate, my life was over.

i became very depressed and my drinking got exponentially worse.

trying to find jobs since has been absolute hell. the ones i've procured have been horrible.

what always sticks with me is that just two months before this incident happened, i was robbed at gunpoint -- gun to my chest -- as the cops watched. i testified, the prosecutors said i was the best witness they ever had, the defendants got many years in prison. and then two months later a prosecutor wouldn't even give me 1 second to talk with her about the bullshit public intoxication charge that cost me my career.

i was walking home at 11 pm after seeing my friend's band play.

as i was about 200 yards from my apartment, i heard running footsteps.

my spidey sense goes off.

but it's arlington, va, so i figure people jog at all hours.

i step off the sidewalk to let the jogger through.

he grabs me and sticks a gun on my heart.

his friend, who was thicker and arrived 2 seconds later, punches me flush in the face from the side.

"didn't go down," i think to myself.

but the guy with the gun starts yelling, "give me all your money."

i drop to my knees, throw my phone and wallet in front of me.

the two guys grab it as a jeep pulls up. they get in the jeep and take off.

immediately, headlights go on in my apartment's parking lot and from a car on the side of the street. they also take off.

i think to myself, "my god, what an organized crime for such a small robbery."

turns out, the 2 other cars were cops who watched the whole thing. they had been tipped about the robbery string and were following these guys.

there was a whole article on arlnow.com about it. many people criticized the cops, saying i could've been killed while they watched without doing anything. but, to be fair, i think i'd have been in more danger if they let themselves be known in the course of the crime, because the guy could have panicked and pulled the trigger.

i had the same thing happen to me. drunkenly fell asleep against door because i had lost my keys and would rather wait 3 hours for the super than pay $500 for a locksmith. i woke up to my neighbor calling 911. i was like wtf man what are you doing?? he claimed he thought i was unconscious and was worried for me (nevermind that he never tried to wake me up...).

i was in a daze at that point and just waited around until the ambulance guys showed up a few minutes later. i told them i was fine and that it had been a while since i had any drinks and could pass any sobriety tests they gave me. but they claimed that because i was under drinking age, they HAD to take me to the hospital and they'd call the cops if i didn't cooperate. the hospital was 2 blocks away so i said okay fine, let me walk on over. they threatened me with the police if i didn't go on their ambulance.

get to the hospital, the ED doesn't do ANYTHING for me -- no fluids, no labs, not even IV access. later on, i get hit with $1000 ambulance fee and $1000 ED charge.

what i learned from this ordeal is to ALWAYS run. i knew they were coming, i could've gotten onto a subway or PATH platform in a minute and made my escape. my error was in assuming that these would be reasonable people who would understand that i'm just locked out of my own apartment and it's nbd.
