best i can tell, i will be making about 300k next year - we don't pay lockstep (but do pay market to first years; raises after that are "based on merit," i.e., way below lockstep).
i'll be lucky to break even next year with what i'm making now, actually. my buy in probably isn't too bad but will be a few hundred. i have to purchase $2m in life insurance and a LTD policy. i have to contribute 13.5% of my comp to a keogh plan (which is 180). i also am on the hook for 100% of my employment taxes, and have to file like 15 state tax returns.
did they bring you into a partner meeting after it became official? that's what they did with me.

i was in midlaw before this and was surprised because i thought all biglaw firms in major cities paid lockstep, but if you look at vault it looks like there are a bunch that don't. DLA piper is, what, v30-40? and they claim raises are based on merit (which, again, means the raises blow). |
