Depends on the practice group and work flow. I don't think most people are as blatantly heartless as people ITT are talking about.
But yeah, its not like people say, "I'm sick" and all the partners jump in and just cover your work. If you're lucky and have coverage another associate will do it for you but you're pretty much still responsible for doing all the time sensitive shit, and then the non-time sensitive shit piles up for you when you get back.
If you need to get de-staffed on stuff I'm sure people would do that for you, but keep in mind that means someone has to get staffed to cover you, and you will lose a lot of hours and it may be a month before you get fully staffed again. Long story short you're not working at McDonald's, people can't just fill in for you for a day and you pick up where you left off.
