Because of the divisions you end up with weird situations where you often don't have the two best teams playing for the conference championship anyway. 1. The finality provided by the current playoff system and the BCS before it is false. This is due to the inherent randomness involved in each game and the the huge amount of variation in style of play from team to team to CFB. Not only is it possible, it is likely that, from the perspective of head-to-head competition, we will have the following situation: 1 > 2; 2 > 3; 3 > 1.
2. Adding the extra layer of achievement to the CFB post-season is detrimental to the entire CFB experience. It used to be that all of the teams in a conference were gunning for the same goal: the conference title and a spot in the conference's premiere bowl. Now, the absolute top programs view a mere conference title without a birth in the playoff to be a disappointing year, and due to the SPS nature of CFB rankings, the top programs have huge, close to insurmountable advantage to other very good programs who do not have the ability to compete at the same level year to year. This divergence in outlook and prospects is cancer for CFB. |

I'm a big fan of a 4 team playoff vs. an 8 team, but the committee has two big problems:
-they are there own worst enemy in how beholden they are to the previous weeks ranking. Every week, they bend over backwards to justify team X jumping team Y after playing team Z. This puts way too much weight on the initial rankings before shit really shakes out and you see which teams are fraud and lies (looking at you, FSU and LSU). Furthermore, teams like UCF and tttOSU never have a shot because there's no way you can justify them jumping 4-6 spots up with their schedule. I pointed this out in week 11
-Wayyyy to much emphasis on the "eye test" and conferences. The eye test is, of course, fraud and lies, and conferences like the ACC are criminally underrated while the SEC gets a free pass every year. Part of this blame is on the schools, since no one wants to play the top teams in November. You know nothing about college football if you think Saban wants to play Mercer.
All this being said, Ohio State ended up exactly where they should be, UCF got fucked, and bama is probably the best team in the country. In that sense, I think the ends justify the means. I am a yuge Auburn fan fwiw |
