also instead of hiking into the wilderness, I could simply go to the Cass Scenic Railroad and have a real steam locomotive take me into the woods. then we would all go into the caboose, the caboose would get de-linked from the train, and we'd camp in a caboose in the middle of the woods for a long weekend.

We stayed at the Morris Harvey Inn, which is the first that comes up if you Google search. It was quite nice, decent food. NB: not all rooms have a private bath, choose wisely.

There was another in a different area, I think right off 64 or 77, that's one of her favorites ever. I'll try to find it and bump if I'm able.

Why the hell did they call it West Virginia? Its like calling a State "West New York" like its just the Western part of another state. No identity or name of their own.

A lot like the "United States of America".

"We're not a real country with real culture, we're just a bunch of States that are united in the northern part of the American continent."

Fuck these bullshit names.

Several cooler names were suggested, including Kanawha, Vandalia, Allegheny, and Augusta, but none of these names could command a majority. So they went with West Virginia as a safe compromise.

They could have called it some English name like they do with many other parts of the US.

Example of North and South Carolina's name origin:

Carolina is from the Latin word for Charles (Carolus) honoring King Charles I of England (who made the original land grant in 1629). South Carolina was formed in 1729, when the Carolina colony was divided in two. South Carolina was the eighth state to ratify the United States Constitution in 1788 (see statehood order).

Call it Bristol or Manchester. Or whatever other name sounds cool, but this is bullshit.

Same is true for other countries. "United Kingdom" is much better than "France" "China" "Germany" etc.

It used to be considered the American frontier. At Pricketts Fort State Park near Morgantown, you can visit a replica of a 1700's era fort built to protect English settlers from Indians and the French. Costumed reenactors will tell you what life was like on the edges of the British Empire.

Wheeling is kinda interesting. Much different culture

Skiing can be meh depending on the year but if it stays cold Snowshoe and Silver Creek are OK. owned by the same people that own Whistler, and it's gotten pretty fancy. less than a day's drive from anywhere on the east coast but hard enough to get to that you don't have all the scouts and church groups pizzawedging down the slopes

Also near one of the ski resorts is Green Bank, home to one of the largest radio telescopes in the USA, used by astronomers to look at the distant parts of the universe. Within a certain radius of the radio telescope, you cannot use a cell phone. People who think that cell phones make them sick move to Green Bank, West Virginia, the city with no cell phones.

Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia, is nearby, though it will take you a few hours to drive the winding road up to the top where you can take a selfie with the marker.

Well let's start with the CROSSROADS OF AMERICA, the city of Wheeling, West Virginia, the metropolis of the Northern Panhandle. First, stop and consider the strategic importance of it. The Ohio River runs through wheeling. The National Pike ran through Wheeling. Interstate 70 runs through it, and it's the easternmost extent of doob's exclusive lot lizard territory under the Treaty of Breezewood. Wheeling has been a transportation hub for centuries.

What's there to do in Wheeling? Well, you can visit the West Virginia Independence Hall, where the state first seceded from the secessionist government in Richmond. You can visit the wonderfully preserved Eckhart House mansion, to not only see how the wealthy lived in Wheeling, but also to EXPERIENCE it with one of their luxurious tea servings.

You can go shopping at the Artisan Center, an abandoned warehouse that has been converted into multiple stories of handicraft shopping. If that's not to your liking, you can shop at the Centre Market, a massive market similar to the one in Charleston, SC that sells antiques and souvenirs, not to mention food.

In the evening, you can catch a traveling musical production at Wheeling's historic, restored, and gorgeous Capital Theater

https://www.capitoltheatrewheeling.com/wp-content/uploads/donate-banner.jpg

Ever wanted to visit an ancient Indian burial ground? The city of Moundsville, West Virginia in the northern panhandle is literally built on a giant Indian burial ground. The archaeological site is open to the public

http://www.wvculture.org/history/thisdayinwvhistory/0319.jpg

Finally, at the very tip of the Northern Panhandle, you can find the world's largest teapot:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qXQyKYHMWHU/VVizlh_puYI/AAAAAAAALKw/9PwROWAohdU/s1600/teapot-front.jpg

as you marvel at the teapot, marvel also at the fact that you are standing at the very northern tip of West Virginia, where you are further north than Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Columbus, or Trenton. You are about as far north as Peoria, IL. And this all used to be part of a slave-holding southern state!

I'm originally from Pittsburgh, but I saw the teapot more recently. I went on a search of gravestones of my ancestors ... many were buried in a small town in Ohio along the Ohio River.

The Teapot is just off the highway shortly before crossing the bridge over the river.

Tennessee for the same stuff. But honestly the state of California is ridiculously underrated if you're into outdoors activities.

I stayed in cabin in state park there for one week w my wife and kid and buddy and his wife and kid. 180 beers and grilled stuff every night. No internet, no tv, but park rangers did funny stuff like nature bingo and scavenger hunt's for the boys. My kid still has a toy he won at bingo from there.

Lost river state park.

It wasn't a week it was like four nights because they had a special 4 for 3 night deal. Park rangers were 180 awesome...did family s'mores night and were really 180 country bros.

I once drove through West Virginia and stopped for a random flea market, where I bought a ton of bootleg CDs for $1 each. So we both found music there.

In Weston, WV you can tour the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, where the mentally ill were once locked up. You can see the tiny rooms where would-be poasters were kept

This creepy old insane asylum is supposedly one the most haunted places in America and attracts thousands of ghost hunters each year

Of course everyone knows about the New River Gorge bridge, West VA's biggest landmark and the thing on the back of their state quarter

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/11/New_River_Gorge_Bridge.jpg

but did you know you can do a "bridge walk" where you walk across the bridge via a narrow steel beam, with a cord the only thing preventing you from falling to your death if you stumble?

If you ever get tired of driving down country roads, you can stop in Morgantown, WV and try out the Personal Rapid Transit system. It's sort of like a train, except it's little pods designed for groups of 1-4 people.
