It's like keeping a person on life support - they're alive, but with no quality of life, just barely functioning.
Taking Amtrak from Philly to Penn Station for example I used to call "the Apocalypse tour" - it runs through every urban station between Philly and Penn, like Trenton and Newark, and every station/city looks literally like bombed out WW2 Dresden. It's disgusting.
We are the wealthiest country in the world and the state of our public infrastructure is beyond embarassing. I don't understand how our leaders don't realize investing in that would pay massive economic dividends. Being in Penn station literally gives me anxiety, I hate it that much. Going in, you just want to get the hell out as fast as possible. |

Not to sound cliche, but it's New York fuckin City. And the public deserves better, what we get now is a daily "fuck you" from these systems, let alone a "welcome". People even behave differently in spaces like that. Feel the vibe in Grand Central, even when it's busy. It's calmer, and people feel a sense of awe. Penn, the anxiety and stress is palpable.
