Apparently there is a whole country full of young women who don’t know how to call a cab, and who have spent a lot of time picking out pretty outfits for dates they hoped would be nights to remember. They’re angry and temporarily powerful and last night they destroyed a man who didn’t deserve it.

The author did not come of age, sexually, until the late 1970s, several years after 1963, and she has therefore never known the kind of sexual repression which she assumes was suffered prior generations, who came to sexual maturity before 1963.
However, true "Girl Power," as defined here by the recent Me Too moment, would not come for yet another 40 years after the late 70s. In between the date of the author's coming into sexual maturity and the rise of the Me Too movement, over forty years passed, which roughly the same amount of time which passed between the end of World War 1 (1918) and the Tet Offensive of the Vietnam War (1968). (Note that the author is taking a certain amount of poetic liberty with respect to the chronology here). |
