Got Disabled (didn't buy disability insurance) and now makes 40K in NYC working in a lab, trying to get by. Moral is don't pay off all your loans at once. Either IBR/PAYE or PSLF

yes. anyone who makes a good living from his career should have a solid lt disability policy. usually employers will offer it as part of a standard benefits package.

I can get long term disability insurance through work but it's not automatic. I have to fill out extra paperwork to get it and pay an extra premium.

you should definitely get it. it's arguably the 2nd most important insurance to have after health.

Someone who sits at a desk all day and on a couch all weekend while his arteries harden and experiences 10 pre-BlackBerry-lives' worth of stress? Yes. Far more likely to use it than you are life insurance.

Car accident?

Sucks he was a surgeon that relies heavily on fine motor abilities.

He could have probably still practiced as a family med physician - literally just lie there and hand out flu medication

hypothetically, how hard is it to get longterm disability paid out?

like let's say I am 29 and make 300k. I get on a longterm disability plan to pay me like 5k+ per month up until age 65.

Then, three years later, I develop crippling clinical depression or an anxiety disorder or something like that. Is that enough? How about "back pain"? Chronic fatigue syndrome?

Difficult but not impossible. These companies will hire private investigators to snoop on you and build a case to show you aren't really disabled

Being a surgeon seems risky tbh - your entire job relies on your fine motor abilities. The moment you get arthritis, get shaky hands due to aging, something bad happens to your body, you have to quit.

Lol at ever paying back student "debt" when you can defer it forever by taking 6 units at a community college once a year.
