always strikes me as odd that any given game doesn't always award the same total number of points.

in world cup, if one team wins, 3 total points are awarded. if it's a tie, 2 total points are awarded.

in the NHL, if the game ends in regulation, 2 points are awarded. if the game ends in overtime, 3 total points are awarded.

this always struck me as odd.

I’d prefer they go back to the old system. 3 periods, one OT then if no winner a tie. Keep OT 3 on 3 if you like. Win = 2, tie = 1 each, loss = 0. The shootout sucks.

shootouts are great. rewarding losers of shootouts is the stupidest decision in sports history

Awarding a win in a team sport for a stupid skills competition is TTT.

Shootouts are shit, it's very different than an actual game so it's awful as a way to break a deadlock

Still doesn't sit right with me. I see the argument in the playoff context over golden goal, just feels shitty

how do you feel about tennis tiebreakers?

there needs to be some way to prevent a 4 hour soccer match.

olympic hockey is much better than the NHL in this respect. every game is worth 3 points. it's either 3-0 or 2-1.

Should go to an EPL/Champions League hybrid where it's a double round robin, 3 points for win, 1 for tie, 0 for loss. Top 8 teams get seeded into best of 4 playoff series regardless of conference.

Soccer used to be 2 points for a win. They changed it to discourage 0-0 draws.
