Sportsmos: Should Every Game Be Worth The Same Points (NHL, World Cup, etc)?

in world cup, if one team wins, 3 total points are awarded. if it's a tie, 2 total points are awarded.
in the NHL, if the game ends in regulation, 2 points are awarded. if the game ends in overtime, 3 total points are awarded.
this always struck me as odd. |
