I've heard that once you get past 4th or 5th year they basically start passing more and more work onto the "good" associates and less and less work to the "bad" associates. they don't really fire the "bad" ones but they just slowly cut them off from work until they basically can't justify their time and leave.
so basically, there aren't a lot of people billing between 1900-2100 hours at year 7. instead there are a lot of people billing 2400 hours and a lot of others billing 1500 and getting ready to leave.
is this the reality of what you've seen?

lol at someone leaving because their life was too chill and they are making more money than they ever had before.
if youre there in good standing, you work if there is enough work. sometimes markets are slow. if they dont want you there, they let you know explicitly that you will have to leave. how hard or soft this approach is depends on the firm.
