1. Property is cheap. In many places even people who work hard at min wage jobs can afford a nice house. Contrast that with the coasts where even big lawyers can't afford to buy an apartment.
2. The schools are pretty good and free. No one really sends their kids to private schools. So yes your cousin in San Francisco may make $100k more than you. But he's spending the pre-tax equivalent of 160k just to send his two kids to a school where the other kids speak English.
3. The culture is significantly more humble. As someone who went to an ivy from a public midwest school, the ivy kids were not really that much smarter than the kids in my honors classes. The parents are not as striver as you hear on the coasts. For whatever reason every parent on the coasts will tell you their kids SAT scores and convince you they are geniuses being recruited by both Boston University and Trinity - and you know they took YEARS of SAT prep. Meanwhile a midwestern kid might have gotten a 35 on the ACT and gotten full scholarship to Nebraska and no one says a word about it.
4. The communities are much stronger (which has been proven empiracally). Life is a lot different when you go to the movie theater and see your friend's kid working there vs seeing a 50 year old non-english speaking immigrant who took 3 buses to get to your neighborhood. |
