Given the speed of change during this period, this is too broad. 80-83 have much more in common with someone born in 1970 than 1990.

There's nothing magical about a year than ends in "0" just because it's pretty. 1980 is not the right year.

A minority of demographers and researchers start the generation in the mid-to-late 1970s, such as Synchrony Financial which describes millennials as starting as early as 1976,[23][24] Mobilize.org which uses 1976–1996,[25] MetLife which uses birth dates ranging 1977–1994,[26] and Nielsen Media Research which uses 1977–1995.[27][28]

The majority of researchers and demographers start the generation in the early 1980s, with many ending the generation in the mid-1990s. Australia's McCrindle Research[29] regards 1980–1994 as Generation Y birth years. A 2013 PricewaterhouseCoopers[30] report and Edelman Berland[31] use 1980–1995. Gallup Inc.,[32][33][34] Eventbrite[35][36] and Dale Carnegie Training and MSW Research[37] all use 1980–1996. Ernst and Young uses 1981–1996.[38] Manpower Group uses 1982–1996.[39]

1980 is by far most common.

Some go as early at 1976. Only a few go as far at 1982.

IMO 1985. I've heard 1983, but even that seems too early to me.

I was born in 1978. Didn't grow up with a computer in the house, and most people I knew didn't have a computer. Went outside to play, etc. I think mid-80s bornmos are the first ones for whom that isn't the case - had the internet at a young age, didn't go outside as much, etc.

yes, but even that is late - 10th grade and getting your first computer isn't the same as growing up with one (and internet connectivity).

whoever would define millenial as 1976 is completely nuts. that is beyond wrong.

There's a difference between "internet connected home computers" and pervasive access, though. I remember when I was in high school, we got a computer and an AOL account, but it's not like I could have sat around all day poasting.

We're not getting into subsets yet, though this distinction seems to be becoming more obviously pronounced. We may have to cleave Millennials into X-llennials and Shitlennials.

Good call on the X-llenials.

I'm a mid 1980s bro and I feel right in the middle and associate more with Generation X as well, even though I'm way too young to.

Was heavy into computers by the age of 6 years old in the early 90s and was on the internet constantly from the mid-90s on. Was using AOL regularly with friend even before AIM came out. AIM was HUGE at the end of middle school and high school. I played Quake online and team fortress and shit.

So, I am proper native internet.

But at the same time I grew up watching shit like Real World San Francisco and loved grunge music.

I can get behind this. Early-80s bros who played outside (and something other than coed soccer) don't deserve to be lumped in with early-90s faggots.

My siblings and I were all born in the 1980s. There's a huge difference between us, particularly re: use of technology. My brother born in the late-80s was on IM in high school; I was born in 80/81 and online and offline lives didn't yet merge -- computers were still for nerds only when I was in HS. This has huge social implications.

"generations" last 15 to 20 years. "millennials" came after gen-x and before "gen-z," so we first have to pick a terminal point for gen-x. most commonly, that is 1981, since the class of 1982 graduated highschool in 2000 (hence, "millennials"). as for where it ends, that ranges from late-90's to 2001, but no one seems to go beyond 2001, since that was a hard break economically and socially due to cheney's false-flag attacks. but since a generation has to last at least 15 years from 1982, the endpoint is also no earlier than 1997.
