And then gradually people started admitting that you rarely work a full day, that the pay is great, etc. And people who switched out of biglaw didn't land in a more chill situation, missed the pay, etc.

Am I reading this right? Was all that complaining justified? Or were the complainers just bitchass millennials who didn't want to lift a finger?

My understanding is that biglaw post-2008 is different from biglaw pre-2008- we never got as busy as people were in 2007

The bad part of the job is the limited control - if you have a busy a month is largely out of your hands - whether you're working this weekend is largely out of your hands - etc.

But, I can't imagine it is that much better in house making 1/3rds as much

I enjoyed my time there until it got too boring/stressful and I went in house, but it really is pretty bad compared to the rest of the business world. It's normal to work a job where the weekdays are really busy as long as you can enjoy your weekends, or to have weekend work in an otherwise manageable job, but the combination is deadly - the weekend calls and emergencies prevent you from fully recovering from the week, and it grinds you down after a while.
