Good guys but messed up his life. The kid is awesome. If she would be willing to leave and let me adopt the little dude and raise him myself I would be 100% cool with that.
We have never married. Mostly because she is much younger and wanted to finish college with all of the grants/financial aid she was getting. Stating my income on the FAFSA would have made that impossible.
I really shouldn't complain too much - the whole thing is 100% my fault. I let her quit working to focus on finishing school full time. Now she's used to not having any responsibility and has become incredibly lazy and useless. It sounds like you know this character arc very well.
I'm a lawyer but don't practice law any more and work as a business executive.
