The Jersey Shore was always extremely straightforward, obvious, and gross in it's presentation and intent--you're here to get fucked up and get laid. The Floribama Shore is bizarrely twofaced. You have all of the aesthetics of the Jersey Shore--the shitty beach town, dive bars, retarded muscled up chads, and messy bar sluts--without any of the spirit or intent. While on the Jersey Shore you had love interests and relationships, the focus was always on blackouts, one night stands, and "the hunt". The drama of the show would center around this kind of stuff too--dudes getting in fistfights over chicks, hushed arguments as to who should hop on "the grenade", and so on--and you could tell that's where all of the effort was put in, whereas it was clear that the intrigue that was supposed to spring out of romantic relationships between characters was half-assed at best. The Floribama Shore was essentially the opposite. It tried to be a much more "wholesome" show and it was largely centered around the friendships, backgrounds, and life struggles of its characters. At least a few times an episode you have dudes hugging each other and talking about how they're "boys", promising that they will be at each other's weddings, and identifying with each other's difficult upbringings. It's a bizarre copy of the original that's all about hugs and high-fives instead of spiked hair and cock piercings. In a lot of ways it's an indication of how shitty our culture has become. The Jersey Shore was in a way a "swan song" of the early 2000s zeitgeist, a time before shit hit the fan and things are far away enough in the past that they still seem normal. With the Floribama Shore, we see how we almost we will remember the 2010s, rife with millennial touchy-feelyness, bitching about how you still live with mom, and glorification of casual sex without the genuine desire and vigor of it or even engagement with it. Ultimately, one is real, visceral, and energetic whereas the other is neutered, dull, and ostensibly emotional yet realistically shallow. Early JS was good because it was genuine reality TV... the people on the show were there just to get drunk and bang sluts on MTV's dime and maybe achieve the level of celebrity of an ex-real worlder. Later seasons were lame because they realized they were way bigger than that.
Floribama is just these dumbs tripping over themselves to be the next snookie or paulie D. it's cringeworthy how that stupid girl who pisses everywhere wears those animal pajamas like she's not obviously shilling them. |
