Date: January 21st, 2018 1:19 PM Author: diverse state On its own, Gift Cards are an unbelievable and wildly profitable business. Insanely profitable. The major company that does a lot of Gift Cards got bought out this week by PE - I had been eyeing it for years but it never got low enough for me.
Basically when you buy a gift card you give an interest free loan to the Gift Card company until the funds are drawn down, which then can be reinvested into money market or treasuries. In addition to this interest free loan, after a certain point Gift Cards used to either expire or run-off, representing direct profit to the issuer.
