There is a funnel of criminality for poor people that needs to be broken: fail to pay traffic tickets, get license suspended, get arrested for driving with suspended license, more fines, licensure issues more byzantine, more driving with suspended license, jail time. Mix marijuana possession in there and some domestic violence bullshit because your woman is apeshit and calls the cops when you displease her. Its very easy to get jailed when you are poor and your jail time helps no one and costs everyone.
2. The federal government is the only entity capable of protecting the environment and corporate lobbying is a real threat to this. Every square foot of national parks needs to be preserved.
3. The military is way too big and overfunded.
4. Mexicans are pretty 170. They are chill and loving and fun to be around. Gang activity is something that can be isolated from mainstream Mexican culture and dealt with (in a way, say, that terrorism cannot be isolated from mainstream Islam).
5. Big box stores are evil and you should try to buy local when you can. |

I don't know how long you worked in criminal law for, but I've worked in this field since I graduated from law school several years ago, and it's depressing to see how often it happens. I think the frequency with which it occurs depends upon whether there's lots of options and opportunities available to the poor (job opportunities, public transportation, etc.). If you live in the city, there are more opportunities than if you don't. However, half of the US still doesn't live in an urban area.

If you spend real time with Mexican families, you realize they are often great people. The mom and grandmother will cook for you and wait on you. The father will interact with his kids in a loving way. They are self-deprecating and love to make fun of Mexicans. They look for a reason to barbecue and play music and dance. If something breaks they will get on their knees to fix it with their own hands. They are physically affectionate with each other and comfortable in their own skin. They appreciate having babies and keeping olds around. If you spend time in Mexico, they are free as fuck. If you happen to compliment a mountain, they will want to take time off work and load you into a pick-up and drive up the fucking mountain. They will bring some guns to shoot and some great food to eat. |
