I'd stay over at his parents house some weekends, and we'd chill and all. We'd hang out together after college--getting together now and then. I liked hanging around him--he usually had something fun going on. I was always more of a grind and he was more playful, silly, a guy everybody loved. I was more academic than he was. He would be moody sometimes but never directed at me. He got married at about age 27, and then abruptly divorced the girl within a year of marriage. She was really cute, and I didn't know what happened as he didn't talk about it much. But it was like he just cut her out of his life entirely. Then he finished up a PhD in some arcane field relating to islam, and now hes a tenured professor at a big megabig state school. He married another girl, had a kid, they separated, and now its like she doesn't even exist any more. He just wrote second wife out of his life completely, only interacts w second wife's mother regarding time w kid. He occasionally does some odd shit, like he wouldn't write a recommendation for an undergrad in one of his classes. Just said no I cant--you aren't serious enough in your studies. To an undergrad. He got a little uptight at me once because I listed him as a character witness on some bar application but didn't ask him in advance. WTF but anyway. He's written a couple books etc. so if he thinks he's hot shit I guess he is. Well, we got into it about a year ago over something to do with ISlam--how it promotes a culture of violence. He has ALWAYS been super shitlibby but he acted just horrified that I would point stuff out about the koran. He's totally an expert, speaks all the languages, knows all the bros, but when I pointed out that jihad probably meant fighting and not just spiritual improvement and that mohammad was a shitty douche of a role model, he got really mad at me. When I said that muslims in America suck for not working to combat terrorism more, and that "learning about islam" is really just their way to make their lives here more comfortable, not doing anything to combat jihadism as a threat, he just cut me off. Unfriended me on FB, when he comes to visit in this area he bypasses me and only visits mutual friends, just like I don't exist any more. I sent him a friendly make-peace email a while ago and he ignored it. What gives? Is a friendship of 20 plus years over? Because I had thoughts that differed from his area of admitted expertise? How does this happen? Are Professors just odd ducks generally? |
