they need simple, strong guidance from our social and financial systems to shepherd them away from danger and toward stability. cutting them loose and telling them to do whatever they want is basically like taking a 5-year-old to a steel foundry and telling him to explore and have fun.

Disagree. The complexities, interactions, tendencies, etc. of our social, political, and economic systems can be described in simple terms and understood by a typical high schooler. Modern distractions and practical limitations are the primary hindrance.

we tell people to "save for retirement." a large portion of the population doesn't do that, for various reasons. a wise system would make it so that they saved automatically and didn't have to worry about the complexities of such a thing at all. that's a good example of how soft paternalism works better than traditional libertarianism.

"Modern distractions and practical limitations are the primary hindrance."

Isn't that the same thing, brother?

Distractions: garbage on TV, corporate-controlled news media presenting a distorted view of the world, professional sports, etc.

Limitations: working full-time, having a family to feed, etc.

The "distractions" category seems like bait for dumbs.

Your limitations category seems distinct, at least in part.

no, libertarianism fails because it assumes that everyone in the world is 130+ IQ

in reality, the vast majority of the world's population is waaaaaaaayyyy too stupid to respond to abstract incentives based on low time preference. you have to be literally autistic or utterly clueless about human nature to buy into "libertarianism" past your early 20s
