I have family who built a 10K+ sq ft house and it ended up being a total nightmare. completely overbuilt and impossibly expensive to furnish and maintain.

$50K+ property taxes. like 8 air conditioners, 10 toilets, 8 showers, and other crap pretty much guarantees something will be broken at any given second. even if it works, enjoy $1K+ electric bills in the summer and similar heating bills in winter. furniture is fuck my ass expensive if you want it to actually reflect the value of the home.

oh, and there's also landscaping, dealing with trees and shit, fucking septic tanks, and everything related to the exterior of the house. total pain in the ass.

yeah, you shouldn't overbuild. i'm also a big believer in the principle that rooms are often made too big, thus adding to the square footage in a non-meaningful way.

Cr at a certain scale rooms can be too big and alienating

agreed.

i'm a big believer in well-defined spaces. i'd much rather keep rooms to a normal scale, and then add spaces for different functions as needed.

this is my house. A fucking 500+ sqft master bedroom. I would happily cut out ten linear feet and we wouldn't even notice it was gone.

yeah, a bedroom is just about the worst room to waste square footage

cr. very little time is actually spent in the bedroom (especially in my case lol!). Much rather add that to the main living area.

for years I shat on the sitting areas in master bedrooms but I actually really like mine and use it a lot. kind of like a mini oasis.

I don't think that I've ever sat in mine. We also have a deck off the master bedroom that I've never once been on.

Yep, that's what I did although my house is more like 3500 ft. Living room with an awesome full bar, put full weight set and rubber floors in one bedroom, use another bedroom as a video game fortress, and one actual bedroom. All three bedrooms are master size. Pool, big garage, huge driveway that I use as a basketball court. Paid under $500k

Not at all. My parents upgraded to an expensive house a few years ago and tbh I actively dislike it and worry it's a sinful excess.

There are some sick mid century modern houses that go for 1-2M a mile from my childhood home where my dad still lives in a neighborhood my best friend lives with his wife & kids. Would kind of like to buy one of those if I were to move back.

No. We paid $375k for ours and I don’t plan on ever spending another dollar for a house.
