It's a middling game with good presentation grossly overrated by people who extol it for faux-artistry because they want games to be "art."

It looks great for a PS2 game, has decent music, and while the plot is barebones it's handled fine. But at heart you just don't really DO much in the game. Each boss has basically one puzzle to execute to figure out how to hurt them, and then you just hold down a button while climbing around to stab them. There's just not much game there.

it was a totally original concept and a neat art style. I haven't played it since I got rid of my PS2 ages ago so I dunno if it holds up, but it was a cool game at the time IMO.

it was cool as fuck when I played it. AWesome art style, the monsters were all unique and fun (very similar to the guardian beasts in the new Zelda). Very strange and sad vibe to it. Why kill all of the beasts just to bring the GF back from the dead?

I liked it

do you think it would hold up in 2018? I know the graphics have been substantially improved, but what about the gameplay? it seems that a vast open world like this game in 2005 would have been mindblowing, but many other games since then have improved on this, especially Zelda BOTW

its not really open world. The world gets opened up to you for each beast. Really all you do is ride a horse from the temple to wherever the next beast is (sometimes a long way but I don't recall doing much in between). The beast battlegrounds tend to be huge though.

I think it holds up. I only played it a few years ago, and loved it. It was kind of sad, honestly.
