John Bai, Model minority

I could probably rant about this all day, but here's a simple one. I'm at the farmers market at the Grove in LA, a “model minority” (see: Chinese) minding my own business playing Pokemon GO. I'm standing still in a spot trying to catch a dope-ass Ekans, when the most grating and disrespectful voice pops up behind me.

“Uh, excuse me? MOVE”

Now normally, I'm happy to take a step to the side, making way for an individual considerate enough to say “excuse me.” So I turn around, see a middle-aged Caucasian woman looking extremely impatient. But as I move, I realize I wasn't even blocking the path. She could have walked around me without any trouble. But of course, being the inferior yellow man playing a Japanese video game like a neet, I should have made way for her, presumably bowing my head in a submissively oriental manner.

“What, you can't just walk around?” I replied, matching her tone.

“If I could, I wouldn't have asked you to move,” said the privileged, fairer-skinned individual.

As she walked past, I prepared every possible roast in my repertoire, ready to blast her if she walked back my way. Unfortunately, she didn't, and I was left salty AF. Was I butthurt? Probably. Was I being petty? Unashamedly. Am I going to tolerate white privilege in micro-interactions like this in the future? Absolutely not.

EDIT: There are many commentors who for some reason have not picked up on the fact that yes, I am specifically pointing out a minor, seemingly insignificant, isolated incident. THAT IS THE POINT. This is an example of an interaction that occurs on a consistent basis. I have no doubt that something similar may have happened to you in the past. That is beside the point. The question specifically asks for my experience. If you're thinking of posting a comment disagreeing, don't waste your time.

You know what you can NOT relate to? Being one of three Chinese football players on a majority-white high school. Being called “dumpling dick,” “eggroll,” “chink” as a nickname, right in front of the coach. Being overlooked for playing time despite higher stats. Is that a little more clear for you? Yes there are assholes, and then there are privileged, racist, white assholes.
