I'm a regular at this place and have been out with the one of the waitresses a few times so they usually write off some of my tab and let me play free pool when it's quiet. 2 dudes vs me and the chick and I took them 3-0 without her sinking a single ball. Had a 6-ball run off the break in the first game. Now they fear & respect me.

What was kind of funny is that I found myself playing partners, which I hate, and then my partner challenged me to singles. I had been playing like shit because I can't ever get into a groove when I play doubles. My partner probably thought my game was off or something so he challenged me to a beer. I beat him three in a row and he had at least five balls on the table each game. I basically just ran out every time I got up.

Then I was telling that story the next time to this boomer and he was all, "You *have* to play for *something*" so I took two beers off that faggot.

lmao. I generally prefer just playing friendly games, but agree it sharpens your focus to put a little money on it. The bar staff wants me to take on some other regular or guy who works there now or something. They have shitty 8 foot tables with worn felt and they don't roll very true, so I think I might try to hit a real pool hall this weekend to get some work in on a good table and sharpen my long shots. I'm not a great shot maker and don't play enough, but my cue ball control and ability to use different spins to link shots is a lot better than the average guy at a bar.

If I'm playing someone better than me or someone for the first time, I'll work backwards and spend my first few shots breaking out my problem balls.

In the meantime my opponent is working from easiest to hardest (99.9% of players do this and are in complete denial about it) and will inevitably leave his last ball or the 8 ball somewhere I'm never going to allow them to get to it.

I have two basic rules when I shoot with rare exceptions:

1. I focus on shooting the balls on one half of the table before moving to the other half. Closest ball, closest pocket in other words.

2. Always keep one ball on each end of the table. I'm a good shotmaker now, so if I have one ball on each end, there is basically no way to defense me. I will be able to get a good shot on one of those balls regardless of where you leave the cue.

I have lots of little rules when it comes to shot selection, but those are my big two.
