Was British colonialism in India a net positive or negative? Everything on the internet says India would be THE superpower if not for those evil Brits, which makes me question what exactly happened through 1949. Any different/recent perspective that dare challenges the basic assumption India would be a great power but-for Brit influence? Looking for an unbiased take.

they unified the place following the mughal invasions and the shattering of "india" into endlessly-warring principalities. that alone was a world-historical accomplishment.

do you also consider early modern Europe to be "shattered into endlessly-warring principalities"

would there have been an Indian Bismark to unite the various kingdoms and principalities of pre-British India?

Any legit sources for this stuff? Literally the first 25 links on google are all about how we need to rethink British colonialism (despite how every article says the same thing) and how terrible it was. What source can help me cut through the quagmire?

The Raj was absolutely awful, destroyed India's economy, set India back centuries. It was literally one of the worst examples of colonialism.

Here's a book about it:

This book just seems like More of the same. Sort of soft analysis, emotional reasoning that any colonialism is bad. Is there anyone who takes a different POV?

aren't the results objectively shit? why are you searching for a different POV when the outcomes overwhelmingly suggest otherwise?

Even if true, preventing India from becoming a world superpower was unquestionably a GOOD thing for the world.

Haven't read up on it but I've been to India. All the impressive shit (and it really is impressive) is from like 1500. Everything since then until now is complete shit.
