The satisfaction from achieving a long term goal does not stay with you for long. This is well known. Hopefully, you will have some fond memories of the process of getting there.

It's really a shit thing to complain about, but I've spent the last 5 years really setting myself up financially. And now that I look back, I feel like I wasted a ton of time.

I'm not sure man, one of the big things I didn't do much of was going out with friends, going on vacations, doing fun and interesting things.

I feel like in a lot of ways it killed my social life, and I'm just a duller person for it.

I bought my "dream" house recently, sold a house I bought a few years back that gained a ton of equity and did it. Wasn't as happy as I thought I'd be. I was thinking about getting a new car, but i think I will spend money trying to have more fun instead.

car and home.

mostly the home. I bought the car right before buying the home. that was a big deal on its own because it was my dream car (nothing too epic though).

the home was a bigger deal. my wife and I needed more space. we definitely got something nice... not a fixer upper at all.

but it's as awesome as I thought it would be. 1 1/2 years later and I still come home every day and think it's fucking awesome.

the achievement wears off, but the actual house and car, etc. is still awesome.

The wife and I just bought a small place on the outskirts of Roanoke; I'm really happy. It's not much, this modest congregation of space and memory we call home, but it's mine, and in that regard I am a king upon this world.

the idea of having the object wears off rather quickly. inevitably there will be a nicer or newer house or car. that said, if the object itself provides ongoing utility you didn't have and you utilize that, its worth it. for example, if you didn't have a boat and now you have a boat, that feeling of deriving joy from simply owning the boat is amazing but goes away after x months. after a certain amount of time, you dont really enjoy just sitting around staring at it. but if you are out on the water every couple weekends, tubing with the friends and having good times, you continually appreciate your decision and hard work. without that, the boat just becomes a burden that eventually owns you financially and logistically, or you become ultra focused on getting the better boat and renewing that initial high you had when you first bought it.

just my experience at least.

i drove a new M2 for a week recently. really, really fun car and good value compared to other M cars.

but case in point: owner had it for several months and had not been able to drive it at all because it wasnt as practical (worried about getting it damaged in parking lots, not good in bad weather, etc). clearly wasnt talking about it or deriving nearly as much joy as they had even just a few months prior.

m240i does 0-60 in 4.3. 335 HP in a small car. You don't really need the M2. also the ride is a bit more bearable, though still plenty sporty if you want to go to the track with the asians.

After awhile, it's just a home. It still gives me pleasure, but I would be fine with much less as long as I was in a "good neighborhood".

I live on a lake surrounded by much bigger and much nicer homes. I still need to put in a dock, build a bigger deck, pave the driveway, update the kitchen, etc... the list goes on and on. When I get the dock, I'll need a ski boat and a few more jetskis. All the while, GC is templing his hands together giggling "HEHE HEHHE HEHE HEHE".

I think it's a lot like that brand new car you just had to have. After a few months, there's mcdonalds wrappers on the passenger seat floor, it could use a good detailing, the radio works, and it gets you from A to B.
