In the earliest days of XO, the "kill self" response was frequently credited to those who lacked prestige. Got into GULC PT!, you might post. Kill self, came the chorus of replies. 169, what are my chances?, you might ask. Kill self, answered the chorus.

The same transitioned into summer associate positions. Does this black suit look good for an interview? Kill self. Offer at Cadwalader! Kill self. Ordered my steak medium well at the callback. Kill self.

AutoAdmit quickly took a position that anything but the highest pinnacle of (collective expectations of) prestige would be met with the answer of, it is better to kill yourself than to suffer through the striver prole mistake-laden hellhole you are about to go through.

But without those things, kill self is relegated to its last fraught position, and there it remains.
