Your world was local. Yes you played video games but you had to do it with friends from the neighborhood, not talking shit online to some kid in India.
You had to think ahead about rides, plans, and people and you had to commit to them, and you were more meaningful to your community because of it. You couldnt hide out online to find other weirdos, you had to adjust, everyone did, to a mean standard of behavior and this forced shared values on you. Little feeling that you were "missing out" on some hedonism instagram lifestyle because everything that meant anything was right in front of you.
Everyting took more effort and the rewards were greater. You had to jack off to the panty sections in Sears catalogs not gonzo pornstars in 4k video.
Work largely stayed at work. When you came home there weren't two separate devices that buzzed if another employee has a half baked thought.

For all of our "progress" over the past 20 years, things actually seemed far more inclusive and far less race obsessed. My core group of friends were jocks, but we also had gay/industrial, techno, trenchcoat/raver/etc. friends who would chill with us during poker nights or whatever.
If there wasn't a planned party or sporting event or something, everyone would hop in their cars on the weekend and just cruise around town blasting their music, be it rap, rock, techno or country. We would all meet up at Taco Bell and get drunk/high in our cars and then just hang out there and shoot the shit. Or we'd all sneak a six pack and take it up to a spot in the woods to party/chill in the dark. I'm not talking about a handful of bros. I'm talking about 30-40 high schoolers. Lol.
In college you'd get girls numbers on little pieces of paper or written on your hand/arm. Then you'd have a drawer in your dorm/apartment with a bunch of scraps of paper with numbers on them. If you lost the number, you were SOL into you ran into her again. Lol.
Another thing I clearly remember is having a crush on a girl from school, but I didn't have her number before we broke for summer vacation. Her number wasn't listed, but I knew her Dad was a lawyer, so I found his work number in the phone book. I called his office and finagled their home phone number from his secretary by pretending to be his daughter's summer field hockey coach. I called her house and invited her to hit golf balls with me since she mentioned she wanted to try it earlier in the school year. After all that, she politely turned me down (she had an older Chad bf at the time)...lol, but ended up falling for me the following year (score!). |

This is exactly what we did (except we pretty much listened to 90s rock and metal (tons of Ministry, Metallica, and Pantera), some bros listened to country but I hated that at the time). Meet up in the parking lot of some waffle house or mcdonalds, like 30-40 kids, hang out and eat, then caravan over to some hidden designated drinking spot (Cocaine Lane, the Overlook, Temple of Sinai parking lot, Unitarian church parking lot, etc) where the cops never showed up. Then drink ourselves silly. Usually a keg involved where someone bought the keg and everyone paid $5 to drink from it, everyone won. Many times go to Waffle House before going home for the night. Other than the rich jewish kids with their installed car phones, none of us had cell phones. We would just meet up around a certain time and figure it out. |
