I got really high and spent 2 hours reading about external ballistics and target shooting. Very interesting stuff that is pretty intuitive - but you wouldn't think about it normally.

So when I shoot my 5.56 at 50 meters and zero my red dot sight for that distance, the bullet is always on the upwards trajectory at that distance, and should similarly zero somewhere around 200 meters without adjusting the optic. Also learned about maximum effective point blank range depending on target size.

for a .308 what is the near-zero to have a far-zero of 200 meters? Where do you zero your optic?

EDIT: looking at a .308 ballistics chart, seems the .223 has a flatter trajectory generally.

but 200 meters is a zero at the downwards trajectory of the bullet arc. There is a corresponding zero at the upwards trajectory. Do people zero rifles with respect to the far or near intersection with the aim point? Or just depends what you are aiming at?

They zero their rifles in for whatever application they're using them for.

The 50-200 zero for ARs comes from 3 gun competitions because they can shoot accurately for up close targets (50 yards) and out to 200 yards without having to fiddle with doping their scope or making turret adjustments on the fly.

Most people zero their hunting rifles in at 200 yards because it just means that you'll hit 2" higher at 100 yards and only a few inches lower at 300 yards, so it takes a lot of the guessing game out of shots within 300 yards, which accounts for probably 90% of all game shots in North America.

That's effectively the same thing as the AR then at 50/200 right?

Basically you can aim point blank and your bullet will hit within 2.5 inches high or low at any distance out too 300 yards, which will give you a clean kill if you aim straight.

Pretty much.

But it all depends on the shooter and what they're want to do. For instance, on my 308 hunting rifle, I've got it zerod in at 100 because I only hunt big woods with it where the furthest shot I'll take 99% of the time is within 75 yards.

Any time I'm gonna be shooting well past 100 yards, I'll just opt for my 7mm which I have zeroed in at 200

Eotech Vudu 1-6X. I reasoned it was a waste to put a red dot on a Daniel Defense. Why buy an expensive AR that can shoot 3-500 yards but limit to ~100 with a red dot?

The .308 has a 6-24X Vortex Viper HST

Edit: Now that I think about it, some of the AR shots were with my arm only (no rest).

same. that 50yard/200yard stuff is pretty amazing.

Thats why my force recon marine bro tells me they always zeroed in their red dots at 50 yards.

Another reason I like the EO Tech is that the very bottom of the circle reticule is where you aim for close in, like 5 yards stff.

Not bad. Just remember that training at 50 meters with man-sized targets (also standing rather than benched) is better for coordination and more likely to be useful in real life.

The best thing you can do is IPSC style drills or snap-turn drills but good luck finding a range that allows em.

IPSC is like 99% dorks and mall ninjas, .8% cops, and .2% former soldiers, not worth competing in but the drills are fun.

And yep, best thing you can be doing short of firing while moving (which is all but a felony at an actual range, you basically need a whole desert or a few acres to practice realistic shooting.)
