We decided to take a detour in Idaho to catch a sweet scenic drive alongside the Salmon River. It started to downpour like I have never seen in my life out of nowhere so we decided to park and just chill with the most beautiful view. "Riders on the Storm" comes on the radio and we make slow and hard love in the backseat. After sharing our last cigarette we decide to go out naked in the rain. We dry off and, after a few minutes, endless uninterrupted skies of the most potent cerulean blue appear. We drive a little bit and stop at a viewing spot and meet these hippy college kids (dreads, hackey sack, the whole thing) who give us like a quarter ounce of weed and rolling papers after smoking us up and highlighting the best swimming spots on my map. We exchanged mixtapes and I remember asking for their phone numbers but they were living on the road and this was before cell phones. We made it to San Francisco a week later because we decided to bum around in Idaho for a while. Not a single moment in the subsequent 21 years seems to capture even a sliver of the excitement and aliveness I felt in those five weeks. Is this really it?

We followed my older brother's itinerary from his road trip two years earlier. He went in late August and I think the route had a lot to do with avoiding unbearable southern heat while also doing cool stuff. We were all over the map though. Five weeks of shiftless cruising. What a dream it was. At least I can say I really enjoyed it. If I did it again today, I'd leave my fucking smart phone at home and take my chances.

The worst part, brother: You can have this again, or at least a shadow of it. Just go. Grab your wife/gf/puppydood and start driving. Unless you have kids, what's stopping you? A job will be there for you when you get back. Wageslaving is much more tolerable when punctuated by bouts of freedom. So why is it the worst part? Because you won't go. We're not really chained to our desks, iphones, and seamless orders. It's enough that we think we are.

By the way, I drove coast to coast with my organic gf, too, a few years ago. Peak experience. We're married now. She's still great. I'm stuck poasting and litttigating, though.

What was the final destination (if any) on your road trip? We arrived at Big Sur at sunset and slept on the beach in a single sleeping bag with a bottle of wine from Surf and Sand Liquors. We were within earshot of a cliffside restaurant's soundtrack and I am now remembering dancing to "Wicked Game" in the moonlight with her. That's wonderful you two got married. Sounds like you have the best of both worlds, brother. Thanks for the encouraging words.

cr. grab ur cash and fucksleeve, leave your laptop, blackberry, and iphone (preferably under your tire when leaving) and hit the road. You will never be bored again, guaranteed.

I have a friend from growing up who literally did this. Met his now wife a few weeks in and they now have a kid and travel constantly while running a business remotely and taking up odd jobs in various locations. I saw him recently for the first time in over 15 years and he was one of the happiest most down to earth people I've spent time with probably ever. He's planning to move to a Costa Rican surf town where there's a Montessori school that costs $200/month and he encouraged me to think about getting out of biglaw and doing something similar although cautioned me that I'd occasionally need to be prepared to have to live off next to nothing. Everything he had to say was so refreshing and inspiring and I'm gonna stay in my shitty job in a major metropolitan area anyway.

The issue is the digital choke chain we all have to wear. Even when you're on vacation, you never really are until retirement, but then you're old.

At least you had this trip; some people started grinding very young in life and missed forming those memories entirely, or had parents hellbent on not loosening their grip even a little.

Your point is well taken. I tend to believe that the type of lifestyle I yearn for is only achievable in the absence of a professional career. I truly envy successful artists, writers, people who can live without considering the banal symbols associated with modern corporate life (e.g. financial markets, deals, laws, technology, policy, regulations, marketing, risk, etc.,) to say nothing of how liberating it must be to exist in a reality that denies these institutions their usurpation of our irreplaceable labor and time.

Wow, in August 1997, I was taking a float trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. A few weeks later I started law school and my life has been one long messy slide into a porta-potty shitter ever since.

August 97 I saw phish at the gorge and we dropped acid and camped in the hoh rainforest on the Olympic peninsula, then road tripped through oregon, went to hot springs near Eugene that was like a 24-7 rainbow gathering with naked 16 year old hippy chicks everywhere

It was a different country back then
