The worst part, brother: You can have this again, or at least a shadow of it. Just go. Grab your wife/gf/puppydood and start driving. Unless you have kids, what's stopping you? A job will be there for you when you get back. Wageslaving is much more tolerable when punctuated by bouts of freedom. So why is it the worst part? Because you won't go. We're not really chained to our desks, iphones, and seamless orders. It's enough that we think we are.
By the way, I drove coast to coast with my organic gf, too, a few years ago. Peak experience. We're married now. She's still great. I'm stuck poasting and litttigating, though.

The issue is the digital choke chain we all have to wear. Even when you're on vacation, you never really are until retirement, but then you're old.
At least you had this trip; some people started grinding very young in life and missed forming those memories entirely, or had parents hellbent on not loosening their grip even a little.

Your point is well taken. I tend to believe that the type of lifestyle I yearn for is only achievable in the absence of a professional career. I truly envy successful artists, writers, people who can live without considering the banal symbols associated with modern corporate life (e.g. financial markets, deals, laws, technology, policy, regulations, marketing, risk, etc.,) to say nothing of how liberating it must be to exist in a reality that denies these institutions their usurpation of our irreplaceable labor and time.

August 97 I saw phish at the gorge and we dropped acid and camped in the hoh rainforest on the Olympic peninsula, then road tripped through oregon, went to hot springs near Eugene that was like a 24-7 rainbow gathering with naked 16 year old hippy chicks everywhere
It was a different country back then
