It started to downpour like I have never seen in my life out of nowhere so we decided to park and just chill with the most beautiful view. "Riders on the Storm" comes on the radio and we make slow and hard love in the backseat. After sharing our last cigarette we decide to go out naked in the rain. We dry off and, after a few minutes, endless uninterrupted skies of the most potent cerulean blue appear. We drive a little bit and stop at a viewing spot and meet these hippy college kids (dreads, hackey sack, the whole thing) who give us like a quarter ounce of weed and rolling papers after smoking us up and highlighting the best swimming spots on my map. We exchanged mixtapes and I remember asking for their phone numbers but they were living on the road and this was before cell phones. We made it to San Francisco a week later because we decided to bum around in Idaho for a while. Not a single moment in the subsequent 21 years seems to capture even a sliver of the excitement and aliveness I felt in those five weeks. Is this really it? He went in late August and I think the route had a lot to do with avoiding unbearable southern heat while also doing cool stuff. We were all over the map though. Five weeks of shiftless cruising. Wageslaving is much more tolerable when punctuated by bouts of freedom. So why is it the worst part? Because you won't go. We're not really chained to our desks, iphones, and seamless orders. It's enough that we think we are.
By the way, I drove coast to coast with my organic gf, too, a few years ago. Peak experience. We're married now. She's still great. I'm stuck poasting and litttigating, though. |

Met his now wife a few weeks in and they now have a kid and travel constantly while running a business remotely and taking up odd jobs in various locations. I saw him recently for the first time in over 15 years and he was one of the happiest most down to earth people I've spent time with probably ever. He's planning to move to a Costa Rican surf town where there's a Montessori school that costs $200/month and he encouraged me to think about getting out of biglaw and doing something similar although cautioned me that I'd occasionally need to be prepared to have to live off next to nothing. Everything he had to say was so refreshing and inspiring and I'm gonna stay in my shitty job in a major metropolitan area anyway.

At least you had this trip; some people started grinding very young in life and missed forming those memories entirely, or had parents hellbent on not loosening their grip even a little. |
