But if you recognise that life is suffering and we're all going to hell, then any little reprieve is a delight imho

hell isn't really "hell" for everyone, though. in fact, the suffering of the damned is a big part of what makes hell so pleasurable for the demons who live there with them. inventing creative new ways to torture humans is highly prized by these folk, who are also often depicted in fiction as having societies that steal the trappings of human aristocracies, centered on luxury and cynical hedonism.

well, personally, i think the world is good, so this is just a thought experiment. hypothetically, yes, if the world was "basically hell," its self-proclaimed "chosen people" (who seem well-adapted to it and also seemingly spend a lot of their time inventing new ways to make everyone else miserable) might be considered its "demons."

depictions of hell and demonic society and nature in the west usually draw on christian and jewish religious sources and also the creativity of milton, dante, etc. recent ones would include shows like Reaper, Supernatural, Constantine, and Lucifer. demons or devils are usually depicted as manipulative, fashion-conscious, sexual, sophisticated beings. they operate according to internal hierarchies but even low ranking ones usually have plenty of wealth and status in the mortal world.

life includes suffering, and cognitive dissonance is a false malady made up by grey-hairs and their warped conception of intellectual cohesion
