But if Faith Gay from Quinn hands you a bill for $5mm, and you can see the hours billed and the price per hour for each attorney, how does knowing whether she makes $4mm or 7mm or 10mm per year make any difference as to what the firm is billing you for your matters? You may think they are overbilling or that their rates are too high or that they pad hours, but her personal earnings are tied to her book of business. |

Sure, we're not comparing non-V100 to V10, but we'll compare peer firms. Just went through one recently, and it helps us get more competitive rates. It's handled by a formal (non-lawyer) team.
On smaller projects, like a 100k or so, we'll solicit a few proposals informally. Firms generally provide competitive rates if they know there are others.
Companies are different. Some bill outside legal expenses directly to the business while others bill it to the legal department. In the latter scenario, over spending on legal can reduce your bonus or jeopardize your raise. |
