BIGLAW is so much more efficient now. Instead of hiring lawyers, they hire consultants. Classes are smaller. Lataral hiring is used more. Associates are culled for performance and numbers are boosted by strategic hires.

Classes are nowhere near as big as they used to be.

As others have said, classes are much smaller. So if everyone is hiring 1/2 to 1/3 as many as they used to, that means if you lay people off there aren't exactly tons of people waiting in the wings to replace them.
