Lawyer who went 2 years state govt specialized experience --> 2 years at a firm --> 2 years now at a company

Company has super generous benefits (full 401K match up to 15% of salary, 8 hours off earned per week, 15-20K of tuition reimbursement and training per year)

Decided to do an MS program so I could move from the legal side of my industry to the business side and hopefully move closer to home where there are plenty of jobs in the industry (as opposed to in-house that's not there)

Spending tonight writing a paper, usually spend an hour a day at work on school stuff and 30 more minutes at night plus usually a few hours on the weekend. In the end this will be a huge accomplishment in my life all done for less than 10K of debt.

Regulated energy markets and the MS is general management so I could be on, say, the operations or "leadership" side of the utilities company

Depends on how many credits I take but 15-25K a year for 2.5 years so it's all covered by my company

Won't leave just yet, but will tap alumni and start networking and prepare to make a move in the next year or two; the nice thing about being a non-traditional applicant is that I don't have the pressure of needing to be some OCI baller; I can use the degree as a selling point to people who look at me as just a lawyer

The pay is slightly below the top rates but yeah it's basically their selling point: we won't ever fire you and here are amazing benefits, but they won't negotiate raises and you're pretty much stuck there and it's in an expensive area too

At the worst this degree will make me more marketable for management level gigs at my current company so there's not much lost if I don't end up switching industries.

Right but you will eventually have professional experience and maybe an MBA and more leverage. I have a JD and a nice resume of experience that isn't something they find every day, so I was made a competitive offer.

Odds are you won't get something with these benefits but you'll make more money, so there's a trade off but you could also look for industries with better benefits if you're OK making less.

It's the difference between being a BA with like 3 years of experience and a JD with 5 years of white collar lawyer experience--different leverage
