2nd tier: Up to 5 cities

3rd tier: Up to 10 cities

Everything else = ARE COUNTRY

I think Nashville is arguably more important/prominent than Miami. Definitely more important than Phoenix even if it's smaller population wise.

Nashville is culturally notable and booming but it's still not that big of a city (36th-largest MSA) which I think should dock some points. For comparison, Miami is 3x as big and is one of the 10 largest MSAs in the U.S.

New Orleans is even smaller (46th largest) and is poor, so it definitely doesn't belong.

tbf i think miami is a stretch too but we have to reach at tier 3 anyways if we're putting this many cities in it

don't see nashville ahead of phoenix, as much of a shithole as phoenix is

think austin and vegas are both pretty clearly ahead of new orleans and nashville. could also make an argument for kansas city and minneapolis on this list.

The Phoenix MSA is much larger than the Nashville MSA but it's full of methed out proles and retirees who are baking in the sun until they die. Nashville has two real industries: healthcare (HCA and CHS are both headquartered there and Vandy Hospital is legit) and music. I can't think of any industries in Phoenix. It also has more universities (Phoenix is just basically TTT ASU) and a pretty booming growth in companies moving there.

and pittsburgh has tech, insurance, and steel (at least what's left of it) but the fact that it has a few real industries (and more people than nashville btw) doesn't make it one of the 18 most important cities in the US

other than the music thing (which isn't really a real "industry" it's just part of the city's culture) nobody would know about the healthcare thing except someone with personal experience with nashville. i can't name phoenix's big industries off the top of my head but nobody outside of nashville can name them for nashville either.

First tier: NYC, Bay Area, D.C.

Second tier: LA, Chicago, Boston, Seattle, Dallas

Third tier: Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Philadelphia, Miami, Phoenix, San Diego, Twin Cities, Detroit, Denver

Seems a bit overly strict, tbh. Feels weird putting D.C. first but its importance and size have both surged so dramatically I don't think anything less can be justified.

Why SF over LA? There's more to this country than tech. SF is the HQ of what currently happens to be our hottest industry (and also a nice place to visit). That's it.

I don't like LA, but it's way more culturally important than SF. And much larger too.

The Bay Area has a per capita GDP around 2x that of LA. That counts for a lot. It's the hub attracting the top talent for the top industries (and other industries, like finance, are heading to the Bay Area in tech's wake).

Dallas being absurdly overrated. Houston has been the central hub of the most important industry on the planet that has drastically altered the global economy and geopolitics for 30+ years. I get why people might want to live in Dallas over Houston, but Houston is clearly more important and relevant to more people in the U.S. and globally, i.e. less provincial and therefore farther away from are country. Houston is Tier 2, and it's the best candidate for #4 overall. Dallas is barely clinging to Tier 3 and at risk of being bumped by Austin, since it's been in a steady decline of economic and cultural relevance for 35 years and Austin's on the opposite trend line, though it's arguably leveling off/cresting.

DFW is a mega-region of over 7 million people now. this isn't the 80's, when houston and DFW were tied - houston has fallen behind a bit. it is smaller and it floods all the time. austin is an afterthought compared to either of then. it's basically just texas's portland, with somewhat more mexicans.

It’s 500k more people than Houston metro, all of whom live 90+ minutes from downtown Dallas and work at places like Frito Lay or 7Eleven HQ. And that’s based on drawing a metro line around DFW that, if it was geographically consistent, would give Houston like half the gulf coast and all the towns on the 10 as far west as la grange. Meanwhile Houston has re-leveled the global economic foundation for the first time since the formation of OPEC. I get that the Doritos tacos at Taco Bell were a big hit, but not quite the same weight class. Dallas is the rust belt of Texas. A fading former capital that mostly represents a Texas identity people remember from last century. The fact that it manages to brain drain true Texas are country effectively via its super-exburbs to doesn’t make it a more important city at all.

Pittsburgh is being terribly underrated here. I think xo is overrating the sun belt and underrating the rust belt. In terms of growing/shrinking it makes sense but there's still a lot of money, culture, and history in those cities that somewhere like Phoenix (lmao) will never reach
