No, I cashed out at about 25,900. It was the day after the first big 500-600-point drop. I also sold one fund a few days before that at the actual top, though. I’m usually not good at timing things, and I am not claiming to have all the answers, but everyone knows a big crash is coming - valuations are stretched and interest rates are rising, not to mention the economic fundamentals can’t improve much more from here. A crash is coming in the next year, or so, and it’s hard to see how gains of more than another 10% or so are realistic. I may very well be quite wrong, but I don’t have the stomach for the risk, so I peaced out. That’s all.

Do you want a serious academic discussion of markets and economic policy?

I believe we’ve been engaging in XO-level banter - I.e/ shooting the shit. Trump is at fault to the extent he claimed his policies would be the panacea that would cure all that ails the market and economy. Clearly no one can offer such a remedy, which is why he is roundly mocked when negative evens occur. Still, Trump can be criticized for some imprudent elements of his fiscal policy - such as the tax cuts.

You can sign up where everyone else does: GoldmanSachs.com, WSJ.com, FT.com, etc. Everyone is saying much the same thing, and let’s be realistic : nobody can possibly know the precise timing or amount by which the market will drop, but it’s clear it will substantially. We are overdue. This time isn’t different - that’s what fools tell themselves each time there’s a market peak.

Julia is still up compared to the rest of the market based on her sell date. Record gains mean little when they immediately follow record losses, unless you are a market timing masterman.

So, mocking threads like this are a bit premature.

Obnoxious? You guys are the obnoxious ones insisting I must be wrong for asserting the same common-sense stuff most financial prognosticators do. It’s just your usual anti-Julia bias blinding you to reality.

I don’t think I can time the market. I just have low risk tolerance and thus no appetite for enduring its gyrations. This means I will likely enjoy lower returns, but I don’t care.

Well I think even Julia understands that being "out" of the stock market over the very long time will be a losing proposition.

As I recall her main reasoning for selling were: 1) she thought a crash was coming; and 2) she personally could not handle the volatility she was expecting moving forward.

She was right about #1, and #2 is a personal thing. Some people value capital preservation over the chance for 10% gains.

she incurred CGT and is now sitting on ca$$$h in her checKKKing account while the market recovers. you don't cash out your entire portfolio to avoid minor fluctuations because you're "risk averse". literally the opposite of what you would tell someone to do. it's absolutely insane and the fact she gives financial advice to proles is LMAO.

Julie- why do you think the market drop within next 12-15 months will be "substantial"?

Change in P/E ratios or change in earnings? What would justify a 30% drop besides some external cause? Are you predicting an external event?

If fundamentals solely dictated equity pricing, then we wouldn’t have much of a market, would we? The answer is a combination of factors, in proportions we don’t yet understand, but one of which will surely be simple negative sentiment, as demonstrated by the big drops two weeks ago or practically any big decline in history. Fundamentals impact sentiment, but the two aren’t perfectly correlated, and market euphoria and panics are difgicult to predict or control.

“market euphoria and panics are difgicult to predict or control”

*tries to predict market panic by cashing out*

*obnoxiously celebrates the dip by posting on xo. Also implies that it’s trump’s fault*

*is wrong about impending crash*

Hence why I asked about P/E ratios.

So you think P/E ratios will take a dive?

Do you think earnings will remain stable/rise?

Your failure to directly address my question is quite revealing.

the corporate tax rate cut, cash repatriation, and change in territorial taxes is the greatest wealth transfer in American history from the gov't to the corporations.

if anything the market is undervalued. the fact that everyone is sitting on the sidelines and concerned about the market is actually positive.

She didn’t talk about her amounts but did say that she convinced her husband to take out $2m from the market. Either she’s lying about that (the better scenario) or her husband is a rich but extremely clueless investor. People don’t just withdraw those sorts of amounts barring some immediate serious cash need.

For what it’s worth? Lmao, one day performance, which is almost singularly attributable to WMT,is worh nothing.

As for the rest of your “prediction” the market will continue to trade in the same range as it has for the past 3 months? Bold proclamation. This will continue “for a while” during which we’ll see “a bit of volatility?” Thanks for the specifics.
