Is it true 1/3 of Americans couldn't come up with $1,000 for an emergency?

There's some truth to this, but the way these statistics are gathered is egregious flame.
https://www.cnbc.com/2018/01/18/few-americans-have-enough-savings-to-cover-a-1000-emergency.html
(39% say they would pay out of savings, 19% with a credit card, 13% by reducing spending on other things, 12% with a family/friend loan, 5% with a personal loan).
Paying "with a credit card" is something you might do even if you have plenty of savings-- cop that 0% interest and rewards, otherwise you're basically throwing money away. Similarly, even if you're saving plenty, you might got back on spending on other things rather than dip into your savings. So surveys like this really only show that at least 17% are hahabrokefucked, 39% are fine-ish, and it's hard to tell for the rest. It's always like this, there will be some headline like "only 15% of Americans have $1,000 saved" but when you actually check the survey it asks specifically about savings accounts (who keeps money in a savings account any more??)
