did you hit your head this weekend? that's the opposite of what i said. i said nadal wasn't going to be able to do that anyway, rotterdam or not. and to be honest, neither should "care" about weeks at #1 at this point anyway. just tournament titles. you take care of #1 via titles.

lance could retire today and novak would never eclipse him

novak is done being a serious slam contender year in year out

he'll never tie lance in slam titles, you seriously think he can do a 25% bump in slam count in his 30s just to TIE lance

and finals/SFs still matter. if fed's not able to win majors at 40, him getting to a SF at 40 would be incredible

i disagree. these guys have so much "black ink" on their resumes at this point that it's not that big of a deal. it'd be like barry bonds coming back and getting a few top-15s in MVP balloting. objectively, it would be impressive, but it would add next to nothing to his resume.

also, these weeks at #1 are weak.

any late 30's accolades that fed achieves are in a different category. a wimbledon semi at 40 is just another semi on his resume, but you have to look beyond the paper and imagine how incredible that would be

we're not disagreeing though.

objectively it's a good achievement. it does nothing for his resume. when people are comparing him to future champions, they're not gonna be mentioning some old age wimby semi.

it's the exact same with connors. everyone loved his USO semi at 39, but nobody mentions that (or some of his other obscure longevity records) when discussing the all-time greats.

connors' overall longevity stats are part of his ATG legacy.

fed's already at 30 slam finals. if fed manages to maybe win 1 more and gets to a total of 35 finals, that hugely makes his legacy even better.

yes but read any discussion on all time greats -- no one mentions those stats for connors.

now your back to tournament titles (and major finals) and i've always agreed that adds to a resume.

also slam SFs. he's at 43. imagine if he gets to 50 slam semis.

how many guys could even qualify to play 50 slams? that's 12.5 yrs of slams.

i'm less impressed by semis.

for example, i think you can make the argument that someone with 2 majors and 8 total major finals is better than someone with 3 majors and 4 total major finals.

i don't think semis ever enter into the equation.

semis are relevant, especially on specific surfaces. sf vs. final might be a function of luck of the draw, in terms of when you run into the champion. e.g.,

fed's lost 4 finals and 2 sf's at RG

djoker's lost 3 finals and 4 sf's at RG

fed is the goat#2 on clay, but it's hard to say that djoker's RG resume is any less impressive than fed's.

"everyone loved his USO semi at 39, but nobody mentions that (or some of his other obscure longevity records) when discussing the all-time greats."

normally i think ur smart but this is fucking retarded, his run at 39 is one of the first things anyone brings up when discussing ATGs

what they tend to bring up after that was connors has a lot of titles that are bogus because they were these "two top guys paid to play amateurs at expensive country clubs" things that were popular in the 70s

link?

i've never seen it.

people always make the consistency argument (titles, weeks at no. 1), the won majors on 3 surfaces argument, and the argument that he skipped RG in his prime bc of WTT and he skipped the AO a lot because no one really cared about it.

to be clear, they bring up his run to the semis at the 1991 USO -- a run where he got a bit lucky by not playing a seed in either the 4R or QF (and by getting Haarhuis in the QF, which was the best he did in a major EVER) -- as evidence that he should be ahead of certain players in the ATG rakings?

weeks at #2 behind prime fed (and ahead of prime djoker) is 100% better than weeks at #1 over an old nadal and an almost 30 cilic. i don't know how you can argue otherwise.

nadal was definitely a better player in 2009 than he was in 2017. same with fed. same with djoker.
